Prepping Tips: Long & Short Term Water Storage

This article was originally published by Mac Slavo at SHTFPlan on March 21, 2020.

Water storage is a bit tricky for most people.  Few are fortunate enough to have a well on their property and a means of removing water from it without electricity.  But since there are a lot of new preppers out there now, we have decided to put together a helpful guide on how to store water for a short and long-term emergency.

In a short-term emergency, even if the power goes or you’re experiencing a massive storm, bottled water can be purchased at grocery stores. But there are other ways to have it on hand in case of an emergency and you don’t want to battle anyone at the store.  You could just buy a few cases of water beforehand and keep them around, but the plastic bottles will eventually begin to break down and could leech plastic into your drinking water. If you plan to store bottled water for a short-term emergency, make sure to drink it every year and replace it before the leaching process can begin.

Unlike the water itself, which has existed on Earth for 4.5 billion years, that manufactured plastic bottle only has so much time before it “goes bad.” The plastic bottles that water comes packaged in (usually polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for retail bottles and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for water cooler jugs). The bottle will eventually fail (expire) and begin to leach plastic chemicals into the water with an effect on the overall taste. So if you happen to find a water bottle well past its printed expiration date in your home, it’s probably safe to drink, if you don’t mind the chemical bits of bottle which have broken down and are now swirling around in it, but you should also be aware of the fact that it might not be super fresh tasting anymore either. But in a life and death situation, you could drink well-expired bottled water and probably be alright. Howver, there are many other options for storing water that could help you avoid drinking the plastic. –Ready Nutrition

Food Grade Plastic Containers

These are an excellent option. Make sure you choose BPA-free containers. These will be safer and if your water is not stored correctly, it can (and will) become toxic.  These containers come in a variety of sizes, but if you want long-term water storage you’ll want some pretty big ones. The benefits of a BPA-free food-grade plastic is definitely the weight and durability.  These containers are difficult to break if you’re using them correctly and they are light enough to move around until you decide where you want them.  Once you have water in them though, they’ll obviously be pretty heavy.

Glass Containers

I am not a fan of these, personally. (But they may work for you. Remember, prepping is about what works best for you, in your life.) They are heavy and easy to drop and break. The cost isn’t worth it to me, however, glass is going to be your best bet if you are concerned about leeching. There is no chance that a glass container will leech.  But getting big enough containers to store enough water for the long term can be difficult and is often beyond the budget for some. Two 64 oz. jugs cost about $20 or, this pack of 4 glass one-gallon jugs costs $32.  By comparison, the plastic jug (pictured to the left) holds 15 gallons of water and costs $79.

How Much Water Should You Store?

The general “rule of thumb” is to store one gallon of water per person per day.  This may not be enough though if you want to wash clothes and dishes and bathe, but with conservation methods, you could certainly make that work. A better goal is to store two gallons per person per day and get enough for a two-week emergency when you first start. Build your storage from there.  It’s always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, and that especially applies to your water.

Filtration

You will also want a way to filter water.  If an emergency or disaster stretches out, (or you’re just beginning and you only have a couple of gallons of water stored) you are going to have to find another source of water when you diminish your storage.  A lot of people like LifeStraws, but a lot of people like the Sawyer water filtration system too.  This portable Berkely water filter (pictured to the right) is pricey but highly rated. Another good suggestion is to grab some water purification tablets. I keep these in my vehicle emergency kit.  Tablets will eventually get used up and are a better plan for a short-term survival situation.

Survival Water Filter DIY – What to do in an Emergency!

Remember to be safe with your water! Drinking water directly from a lake or stream can make you very sick, which is why we have included several ways for you to filter water.  Lakes and streams can contain viruses, bacteria, protozoans, and parasites which can cause severe illness. (Click here for more information from the CDC about contaminates in natural water sources.)

Hopefully, this will give the newer preppers out there some ideas for their water storage and filtration.  If anyone has any other tips for beginners, be sure to leave them in the comments!

US Declares State Of Emergency To Keep Gasoline Flowing After Colonial Fails To Restart Hacked Pipeline

This article was originally published by Tyler Durden at ZeroHedge.

Update 9:00 pm ET:  The US government declared a state of emergency late on Sunday, lifting limits on the transport of fuels by road in a bid to keep gas supply lines open as fears of shortages spiked after the continued shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline.

“This Declaration addresses the emergency conditions creating a need for immediate transportation of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other refined petroleum products and provides necessary relief,” the Department of Transportation said. White House Press Sec Jen Psaki added that “as the Administration works to mitigate potential disruptions to supply as a result of the Colonial Pipeline incident, @USDOT is taking action today to allow flexibility for truckers in 17 states.”

The move lifted limits on the transport of fuels by road to ease the fallout from the continuing closure of the Colonial pipeline, which carries almost half the fuel consumed on the US East Coast, following a ransomware cyberattack on Friday.

The decision comes as the government scrambles to deal with the fallout from the closure of Colonial, the biggest refined products pipeline in the US, transporting 2.5m barrels of fuel a day from refineries on the Gulf Coast to markets such as Atlanta, Washington, and New York (see more below).

If the pipeline is not quickly reopened the impact on prices could become more severe in the coming days, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at data provider GasBuddy. “We’re realizing the gravity of it is maybe worse than what we’d expected,” said De Haan. “There’s still a little breathing room, we’re starting to run low on it. But Monday, Tuesday if there’s no news, you know we’re dealing with something fairly significant.”

* * *

Just in case the US didn’t already have a “transitory hyperinflation” problem, gasoline futures soared more than 4% – and are likely to jump much more – late on Sunday after the Colonial Pipeline announced that while some smaller lateral lines between terminals and delivery points are now operational, its mainlines (Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4) remain offline since late Friday after the company suffered a crippling cyberattack that affected its key IT systems.

Colonial operates Line 1 for gasoline and Line 2 for diesel and jet fuel from Pasadena, Texas, some 15 miles from the nation’s largest refineries, to Greensboro, North Carolina, at a combined 2.5 million barrels a day. They merge at Greensboro to feed a line carrying about 900,000 barrels a day into New York Harbor, and other East Coast pipelines.

Colonial said that it is “in the process of restoring service to other laterals and will bring our full system back online only when we believe it is safe to do so, and in full compliance with the approval of all federal regulations.” Full statement below:

Update — Sunday, May 9, 5:10 p.m.

On May 7, Colonial Pipeline Company learned it was the victim of a cybersecurity attack and has since determined that the incident involved ransomware. Quickly after learning of the attack, Colonial proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat. These actions temporarily halted all pipeline operations and affected some of our IT systems, which we are actively in the process of restoring.

Leading, third-party cybersecurity experts were also immediately engaged after discovering the issue and launched an investigation into the nature and scope of this incident. We have remained in contact with law enforcement and other federal agencies, including the Department of Energy who is leading the Federal Government response.

Maintaining the operational security of our pipeline, in addition to safely bringing our systems back online, remain our highest priorities. Over the past 48 hours, Colonial Pipeline personnel have taken additional precautionary measures to help further monitor and protect the safety and security of its pipeline.

The Colonial Pipeline operations team is developing a system restart plan. While our mainlines (Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4) remain offline, some smaller lateral lines between terminals and delivery points are now operational. We are in the process of restoring service to other laterals and will bring our full system back online only when we believe it is safe to do so, and in full compliance with the approval of all federal regulations.

At this time, our primary focus continues to be the safe and efficient restoration of service to our pipeline system, while minimizing disruption to our customers and all those who rely on Colonial Pipeline. We appreciate the patience and outpouring of support we have received from others throughout the industry.

Meanwhile, downstream customers, which includes pretty much the entire Eastern seaboard, are starting to freak out as they face a new week without the primary source of gasoline supply for hundreds of millions of customers.

In response to the news, gasoline futures jumped 4% to $2.21 a gallon, approaching the highest since 2014. WTI and Brent both spiked more than 1%, while other products such as diesel and jet fuel are also likely to jump.

Should Colonial be unable to bring its main pipeline back online, which as a reminder were hacked by a ransomware group called DarkSide, according to Allan Liska, senior threat analyst at cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, there is no telling how high prices will shoot up as Colonial supplies nearly half the east coast gasoline.

On Friday, the national average stood at $2.96 a gallon Friday, according to auto club AAA, and with national gasoline inventories ample, the pump price wasn’t expected to tick much higher until Memorial Day at the end of May, which is traditionally viewed as the start of the U.S. summer driving season. However, it now appears that we can add gas to the list of items that have seen prices soar. Gasoline last bested the $3 average in October 2014.

Price increases in road fuel may stoke even more worries about inflation as commodities from oil to lumber to corn skyrocket with the world’s major economies emerging from pandemic restrictions. The oil industry was gearing up to meet what is expected to be a surge in fuel demand as newly vaccinated Americans take to the roadways and skies this summer. The downed Colonial Pipeline is a key artery for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel produced by oil refiners on the U.S. Gulf Coast and major metropolitan areas between Atlanta and New York.

“It all comes down to the duration of the disruption. If it lasts longer, it’s likely to result in some location dislocations — shortage of oil products in the East Coast, abundance in the Gulf region. That will support New York product prices and might attract more oil products from abroad,” said Giovanni Staunovo, commodity analyst at UBS Group AG.

One bank that is optimistic on the outcome of the shutdown is Goldman, its commodities strategist Damien Courvalin writing on Sunday that “the Colonial pipeline disruption likely to be brief” while “falling inventories will exacerbate the impact of future potential outages.” Some more details from the note:

With no physical damage to the pipeline, sufficient PADD1 inventories and above seasonal gasoline imports into the region, only a long outage (likely more than 5 days) would materially tighten local supplies. The Southeast region is most at risk of shortages given tighter inventories in the PADD 1C region.

As prior Colonial outages have shown, like in 2016, resupply is further likely to be rapid:

  1. the Colonial pipeline was running below capacity so a resumption of flows at capacity would accelerate the restocking,
  2. Kinder Morgan is working to accommodate additional barrels on its PPL line,
  3. vessels from the USGC and EU can arrive in 7 to 14 days, while
  4. the US administration could waive the Jones Act shipping restriction as well as summer gasoline requirements.

As a result, while NY Harbor petroleum product June cracks and June-July timespreads are set to rally on Sunday’s open/Monday should the pipeline not have been restarted by then, such moves are likely to be short-lived and mean reverting, with the June RBOB contract expiring on May 28.

Not everyone is so sure, and Bloomberg reports that traders are already seeking vessels to deliver gasoline that would have otherwise been shipped on the Colonial system. Some tankers are being secured to temporarily store gasoline in the U.S. Gulf in the event of a prolonged shutdown, they said.

There is some good news: the terminus of the pipeline, New York, was well stocked with fuel ahead of the attack and could weather the upset if missing fuel is replaced or the line restarts quickly. East Coast gasoline stockpiles at the end of April were near five-year seasonal averages. Of course, a lenghty shutdown would mean gasoline shortage the likes of which were last seen in the 1970s…

… which would be poetic justice since price are already soaring at a pace that has surpassed America’s hyperinflationary period, which ended with the Volcker Fed hiking rates to 20% in 1980.

Child Suicide is Becoming an ‘International Epidemic’ Amid Restricted Pandemic Life, Doctors Warn

This article was originally published by Brad Polumbo at The Foundation for Economic Education.

The damage we’re inflicting on children is too devastating to be waved away in the name of public health—it’s quickly becoming an emergency in its own right.

Billions of people across the globe continue to live under COVID-19 lockdowns or heavily-restricted life. And for almost all of us, life amid the pandemic in 2020 was an isolating and difficult year. Yet doctors are warning that children, in particular, are experiencing grave mental health consequences as a result of the lockdowns—leading to an “international epidemic” of child suicide.

The Associated Press interviewed Dr. David Greenhorn on the subject, who works in the emergency department at England’s Bradford Royal Infirmary. The number of mental health crises he has seen, such as suicide attempts, has gone from a couple per week pre-pandemic to now several per day.

“This is an international epidemic, and we are not recognizing it,” Greenhorn said. “In an 8-year-old’s life, a year is a really, really, really long time. They are fed up. They can’t see an end to it.”

Dr. Richard Delorme heads the psychiatric department at one of the largest children’s hospitals in France, and he offered a similar warning to the AP.

Delorme pointed out that it is clearly COVID restrictions and lockdowns taking this toll on children that end up in his hospital: “What they tell you about is a chaotic world, of ‘Yes, I’m not doing my activities anymore,’ ‘I’m no longer doing my music,’ ‘Going to school is hard in the mornings,’ ‘I am having difficulty waking up,’ ‘I am fed up with the mask.’”

Delorme’s hospital went from seeing roughly 20 suicide attempts per month involving patients 15 or younger, the AP reports, to more than double that—and, disturbingly, more determination than ever before in the attempts.

“We are very surprised by the intensity of the desire to die among children who may be 12 or 13 years old,” Delorme said. “We sometimes have children of 9 who already want to die. And it’s not simply a provocation or blackmail via suicide. It is a genuine wish to end their lives.”

This is one of the most painful paragraphs I’ve ever read, let alone had to write about. Merely typing out this story flooded my eyes with tears. But the life-threatening unintended consequences of drastic pandemic measures are too important to overlook.

Government restrictions that would’ve been unthinkable two years ago have been forced through amid the fear and uncertainty that the pandemic’s outbreak understandably wrought. Advocates undoubtedly hoped to save lives. Yet government restrictions have proven dubious in their effectiveness, with both studies and real-world examples demonstrating little clear relationship between lockdown stringency and COVID deaths.

In the meantime, lockdowns and other restrictions have harshly curtailed social interaction and, tragically, catalyzing the aforementioned youth mental health crisis. Here in the US, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 25 percent of young adults considered suicide during the lockdowns, while overall mental health and suicide rates appear to have spiked as well.

Child suicide is only the latest mortifying revelation showing just how big a toll these policies have taken on us. We must factor this human damage into our analysis when it comes to ending pandemic restrictions; not just COVID case counts.

Like any policy, public health orders must be evaluated on their outcomes. As Nobel-prize-winning economist Milton Friedman said, “One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results.” Pandemic lockdowns may have stemmed from an earnest desire to protect the public, but their consequences have done the opposite.

Why? Well, any government action, particularly sweeping mandates, has not just its intended effect, but its second-and third-order unintended consequences.

“Every human action has both intended and unintended consequences,” economist Antony Davies and political scientist James Harrigan explained for FEE.org. “Human beings react to every rule, regulation, and order governments impose, and their reactions result in outcomes that can be quite different than the outcomes lawmakers intended.”

When it comes to lockdowns, we’ve extensively documented the unintended consequences at FEE, including isolationdepressionsuicidalityunemploymentdrug abusedomestic violence, and more. Such severe second-order effects offer a painful reminder of why policymakers should be humble in the scope of their actions. Sweeping lockdowns are anything but humble: They presume that bureaucrats in an office somewhere can save society with top-down orders and nothing will go wrong.

Governments the world over must consider more than mere COVID case counts when evaluating current and future lockdown policies. The damage we’re inflicting on children is too devastating to be waved away in the name of public health—it’s an emergency in its own right.

Bill Gats cold CRISIS darkest winter darkness emergency Emergency Preparedness Energy freezing government is slavery grid failure Headline News Homes Intelwars liars Mainstream media no power pipes burst Prepare Preparedness storms Synthetic beef Texas Weather

If A Few Days Of Cold Weather Can Cause “A Very Serious Emergency”…

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.

What would a severe long-term crisis look like in this country?  Despite all of our advanced technology, record cold temperatures have brought much of the U.S. to its knees.  There has been an epic failure of the power grid in Texas, countless pipes that were not designed to handle such low temperatures have burst, and millions are without power and have no way to heat their homes right now.

In fact, we are being told that 4.5 million people in Texas alone were without power on Tuesday

Extreme energy demand and overloaded frozen utility plants amid an unprecedented deep freeze in Texas are among the factors that led to nearly 4.5 millions customer without power in the Lone Star State on Tuesday, experts say.

Outages spread across Texas left millions in the dark and bitter cold amid single-degree temperatures and a winter storm that buried the state in snow and ice in recent days.

“No matter which way you cut it, this is a massive failure for a grid and a state that holds up energy and electricity as a shining example,” said Varun Rai, the director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.

Most of Texas is on a power grid that is independent of the rest of the nation, and this crisis has exposed how extremely vulnerable that grid can be during an emergency.

Unfortunately, it appears that the cold weather is going to persist for a while, and CenterPoint Energy is telling residents in the Houston area to prepare for “several more days” of power shortages…

CenterPoint Energy, the utility that delivers electricity to Houston-area homes and distributes natural gas, provided an update on the ongoing grid chaos in Texas with some bad news Tuesday evening.

CenterPoint said power shortages could last “several more days” and warned customers “to take precautions for their personal safety.”

Of course it isn’t just Texas that is suffering.

According to one report, rolling blackouts have also been happening in the 14 states that make up the Southwest Power Pool…

The Southwest Power Pool, which controls a grid spanning 14 states from North Dakota to Oklahoma, ordered rotating outages for a second consecutive day.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

But it is.

The extremely cold weather has also sent natural gas prices to utterly insane levels.  All of a sudden there was a tremendous amount of demand for a limited amount of supply, and we saw prices do things that they have never done before

Supply for next-day delivery at the Oneok Gas Transportation hub in Oklahoma traded at $999 per million British thermal units for two contracts on Tuesday, according to David Hoy, a trader at Dynasty Power in Calgary. That compares with $4.19 a week earlier.

Gas at the Henry Hub in Louisiana, the benchmark for futures in New York, traded at $19 at about 11:45 a.m. in New York after earlier soaring to $30, Hoy said. Supply at the hub traded at $3.24 a week ago.

One industry official told Bloomberg that he had never seen anything quite like this…

“I’ve been following energy markets and grid issues for a while, and I cannot recall an extreme weather event that impacted such a large swath of the nation in this manner — the situation is critical,” said Neil Chatterjee, a member of the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

All it took was a day of very cold weather.

Would our system even be able to handle a long-term national crisis that was much more severe?

I don’t think so.

Unfortunately, more bad weather is in the forecast.  A giant winter storm will slam the middle of the country on Wednesday before hitting the east coast on Thursday

And more foul weather was on the way: Another winter storm with snow and ice was forecast to pummel portions of the South and Midwest on Wednesday before slamming into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thursday.

In all, as of late Tuesday, 115 million Americans were in the path of the next storm, all the way from Texas to Massachusetts, the weather service said.

Meanwhile, Bill Gates is trying to convince all of us that “global warming” is such a problem that we all need to start eating “100% synthetic beef” from now on…

Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates said in a new interview that all rich countries should transition to 100% synthetic beef in order to significantly curb the greenhouse-gas emissions driving climate change.

In an interview published Sunday by MIT Technology Review, Mr. Gates, who is now cochair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and chair of the investment fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said the U.S. switching to plant-based meats like those sold by Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat will be “required” for saving the planet.

What crazy times these are.

No matter what part of the U.S. you live in, you cannot just rely on the grid to heat your home.

Right now, millions of Texans that assumed that the grid would always be there for them are literally shivering inside their own houses.

You always need to have a second way to heat your home in case a major emergency happens.  Of course, those that have followed my advice over the years were already prepared for that.

These record cold temperatures will be gone in a few days, and weather patterns will soon stabilize.

But let us not forget the lessons that this crisis is teaching us because the challenges that lie ahead will be far, far more difficult.

At this moment, ABC News says that this cold snap has turned Texas into “a tundra”, and in Louisiana people are using an airboat to zip around the snow-covered streets.

This isn’t normal, and we are going to see a lot more crazy things happen in the months and years ahead.

I would encourage you to get prepared for all of the strangeness that is in front of us because as we have seen, the system is not nearly as stable as most people thought it was.

Million New Yorkers Can’t Afford Food As Hunger Crisis Worsens

This article was originally published by Tyler Durden at ZeroHedge.

In the seventh month of the virus pandemic, New York City is still in shambles, with more than half a million residents unemployed as the small business collapse continues. Broadway is closed, Manhattan offices are empty as remote work dominates, violent crime is surging, and an exodus of people from the city has created a perfect storm of economic chaos that will hunt many New Yorkers for years.

A byproduct of the virus-induced economic downturn is food and housing insecurity for millions of people in the Tri-state area. Deep economic scarring produced by permanent job loss has left many people in a bind; some working-poor may never recover while others could take years.

Food and housing insecurity will be, or should be, a hot subject as millions in the Tri-state area are suffering ahead of the holidays. Readers may recall in early October, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey warned that more than one million New Jerseyans were expected to suffer food insecurity by the end of the year.

Now the problem is becoming more widespread. At least one million New Yorkers are expected, or will soon, experience food insecurity, according to FOX 5 NY.

Alexander Rapaport, the executive director of Masbia soup kitchen network, said, “We have done disasters before, but nothing is even close to what we are doing now,” referring to the long lines at food banks across the city is all too common.

Masbia is a nonprofit soup kitchen network and food pantry, with Borough Park and Flatbush locations in Brooklyn and Forest Hills in Queens. Rapaport said there had been a 500% increase in demand.

In a separate report, NYT estimates the number of New Yorkers who are going hungry could be upwards of 1.5 million.

Denise Allen, a mother who visits one of Masbia’s food banks, said:

“I’m on a limited income. I visit every two to three weeks,” said Allen.

Rapaport said, “there is so much need. So much so that for the last three days, Rapaport, his staff, and volunteers have been operating around the clock. All three locations are now open 24/7, feeding 1,500 families a day, but it is still not enough.”

With demand high for food banks in the city, he said long lines have developed, which forced him to create an entirely new system in what he calls digital food bank lines.

“You now have to make an appointment to pick up your box of food,” Rapaport said.

Meanwhile, it’s not just the Tri-state area that is in economic distress, with millions going hungry while others are at risk of eviction; Feeding America, one of the nation’s top food banks, recently warned that it may run out of food in the next twelve months as demand has overwhelmed its network.

Food and housing insecurity for millions of people across the country signals the transmission mechanism of stimulus, if that was through fiscal or monetary, has failed to support the working poor.

*EDITOR’S NOTE: If you haven’t prepared for the upcoming food shortage, please do now! Time is running out. People can still get food from the food banks and buy it at grocery stores.  That will end, and when it does, the food riots will be intense! It isn’t just food either. There is a combustible combination of several things that could ignite at any second. Please stay prepped and alert.

Last Minute Prepping Advice: Be Ready For Literally ANYTHING!

If there’s only one piece of advice, as a prepper, I could give to those who are just realizing they should be prepared, is in 2020, the truth is, you need to be prepared for literally anything. And I know, that is not that helpful, but let me explain…

With election chaos already promised, a second wave of the scamdemic being invented in front of our eyes, the potential for Earth changes and natural disasters increasing, and food shortages coming down the pike, it seems difficult to prepare for all of it.  Add in an economic collapse, the rollout of the New World Order digital currency system, and totalitarian restrictions on movements, and you have a difficult scenario to be ready for. There’s also the possibility of an EMP attack or a coronal mass ejection from our sun that could take down the power grid for months, if not longer. Literally, anything can happen.

When Not Having Power Kills: 11 Types of Medical Equipment Dependencies and What You Can Do To Prepare

If you watch mainstream media, (or at least understand their predictive programming) the most likely scenario is further economic terrorism in the form of a second lockdown to be blamed on the virus but will be incredibly restrictive. The other very likely thing to take place is election chaos that will be violent and bloody.

The military is being set up to be used against the American people by not only forcibly vaccinating them but “keeping the peace” when the promised election violence strikes.

We could disagree and argue all day about what will or will not happen in the coming months, but one thing is for certain, those who want total control over humanity will not stop and we should be prepared for literally anything.

I would also suggest grabbing hard copies of books that you may need in order to get through what’s coming – no matter what that may be. The following books are all recommendations that I have read cover to cover and have hard copies of:

If there are other books you want, et them now. If you cannot afford the books, check thrift stores, and go to any number of prepper sites and print out articles.  We have plenty, as do other sites.  Don’t take advice if it doesn’t sit with you or resonate with your personal situation. Every single individual and family unit has a different dynamic and it is ok to disagree with the advice offered. But do at least listen to seasoned preppers who have spent a lifetime preparing for what we are about to face: the unknown catastrophe.

Please offer any advice to anyone else who may stumble upon this article in the comments. We have to start helping each other and standing together without fear to be able to beat whatever may be coming down the pike.

Grocery Stores Are Prepping For a 2nd Wave Of COVID-19 Panic Buying

The mainstream media continues to report on the increasing number of cases during this scamdemic. They are obviously gearing us up for something, and grocery stores are preparing for the second wave of panic buying.

If panic buying has not yet returned to your area, you may want to stay alert and potentially expect it soon. Luckily, most readers of this site have figured out that they need a bug out plan and have stored enough food and water to get them through several months of an emergency. If you have yet to prepare at all, you may be too late. Grocery stores are now expecting a second round of panic buying over the second wave.  But this time, it isn’t just the plandemic that has people panicked.  The upcoming election chaos is also taking its toll.

As reported by Today, with a second wave of COVID-19 looming and fear over potential preplanned unrest around the presidential election, consumers are aggressively stocking up on various foods. Grocers are struggling to keep up with the demand for some foods.

Grocery Stores “Prep” For Second Wave Of COVID-19 By Stocking Up On Inventory

“As of now what we are seeing is the start of the second wave of panic,” said Chris Mentzer, the director of operations for Rastelli Market Fresh in New Jersey. “Our customers keep telling me how they are looking for any type of freezer to purchase so they can start stocking up their homes now. Their main concern is meat.” He explained that customers are mainly looking to buy and freeze beef and poultry — ground beef, steaks, roasts and all varieties of chicken.

They’re also starting to buy a lot of frozen meals and frozen pizzas,” said Mentzer. “We are seeing anything that can be microwaved quickly or easily made in the oven for kids, fly off the shelves, as people are preparing for schools and colleges to be closed this winter — along with a run on dried goods and paper goods, as well.” –Today

Buyin frozen pizzas and extra meat is a good idea if you expect the power to stay on, and that’s kind of up in the air right now too.

Marin Katusa on U.S. Energy Dependence: “You Want Social Upheaval? Turn Off the Power Grid”

If the grid goes down, all those frozen pizzas will not be able to be heated up in a microwave or baked in an oven nor will they last forever unfrozen. Buying vegetables to can or dry goods or canned goods is a better option, but readers of this site already know that.

The good news is that if people truly are buying gout the frozen junk food, there will be a lot of excellent vegetables left that you can purchase and can, especially if your garden was meager this year. I like to rab a jug of vinegar every time I am in the grocery store. This way, there’s plenty to can with. You should also consider stocking up on heirloom seeds that grow well in your area.

10 Survival Seeds You Must Stockpile For When The System Collapses

The fact that most people are stocking up on frozen meals could also mean other options such as organic peanut butter and olive oil (coconut oil too) will be available. Those are good sources of fats and can fill you up – and will be a lot better for you than a frozen pizza. Again, things readers of this site already know. The oils can also be cooked with to add sustenance to meals.

chaos Coronavirus election violence emergency Emergency Preparedness experts fake virus Fear Forecasting Headline News hype Intelwars Mainstream media massive shift plandemic planning political divide Preparedness preppers crazy scamdemic Second wave stockpile food Supplies Water

More Than Half of All Americans “Plan to Stockpile Food and Other Essentials” For the Chaotic Months Ahead

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.

There was a time when preppers were relentlessly mocked, but nobody is laughing now.  Today, most Americans are thinking about stockpiling food, and this massive shift in our national mindset has been sparked by concern about what is going to happen in the months ahead.

Many Americans believe that another wave of the coronavirus pandemic is coming, others believe that our ongoing economic depression will get even deeper, and yet others are convinced that the upcoming election could produce widespread violence.  Of course, there have always been people that have been deeply alarmed about future events, but we have never seen anything quite like this.  In fact, a brand new survey has found that over half of all Americans are currently planning “to stockpile food and other essentials”

Slightly more than half of Americans in a recent poll from Sports and Leisure Research Group say they already have or plan to stockpile food and other essentials. The chief reason: fears of a resurgent pandemic, which could lead to disruptions such as new restrictions on businesses. On Oct. 2, the number of COVID-19 cases in the USA was its highest in almost two months.

People still remember the shortages that we witnessed earlier this year when the coronavirus pandemic first erupted in this country, and those that ended up being stuck at home without enough toilet paper would rather not repeat that experience.

So as the mainstream media continues to hype a new wave of the pandemic, we should expect to see Americans hitting the grocery stores really hard.  And according to data company Envestnet Yodlee, there is evidence that this is already happening

Already, there’s some evidence that grocery sales are rising, according to data from industry sources. The typical bill for a trip to the grocery store rose to $72 for the week ended October 6, or 11% higher from the week before, according to data company Envestnet Yodlee.

“That’s the highest we’ve seen since the first week of June and the second-highest since we started tracking this in January,” said Bill Parsons, group president of data and analytics at Evestnet.

Fortunately, many grocery store chains anticipated a spike in demand in advance and started stocking up ahead of time.  The following comes from CNN

Grocery stores across the United States are stocking up on products to avoid shortages during a second wave of coronavirus.

Household products — including paper towels and Clorox wipes — have been difficult to find at times during the pandemic, and if grocery stores aren’t stocked up and prepared for second wave this winter, runs on products and shortages could happen again.

During a time when other retailers all over the nation are failing at a pace that we have never seen before, many grocery store chains are actually experiencing booming sales.

And of course I have been warning that this would eventually happen for a very long time.  During a time of crisis, demand for food and other essentials tends to go up and demand for non-essential items tends to go down.

Needless to say, this is something that is not just happening in the United States.  All over the world, we have seen demand for food on the rise, and this comes at a time when global food production has become increasingly stressed.

As a result, food prices all over the world are starting to escalate quite aggressively

Food prices continue rising during the coronavirus pandemic, jeopardizing food security for tens of millions worldwide.

On Thursday, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations said world food prices rose for the fourth consecutive month in September, led by surging prices for cereals and vegetable oils, reported Reuters.

FAO’s food price index, which tracks the international prices of the top traded food commodities (cereals, oilseeds, dairy products, meat, and sugar), averaged 97.9 in September versus a downwardly revised 95.9 in August.

Sadly, this is just the beginning.

Global food supplies will continue to get even tighter, and global demand for food will just continue to shoot higher.

So I would stock up while you still can because prices will never be lower than they are right now.

Meanwhile, our society continues to unravel right in front of our eyes.  You would think that the Lakers winning the NBA title would be a time to celebrate for the city of Los Angeles, but instead, large crowds of young people used it as an opportunity to riot and attack police officers

A crowd of more than 1,000 revelers descended into the area around Staples Center after the game. Unruly individuals mixed within the crowd began throwing glass bottles, rocks, and other projectiles at officers. That is when an unlawful assembly was declared, and only a limited number of people complied and began to disperse. A larger portion of the group broke off and began vandalizing businesses while continuing to engage in violent behavior, some aimed at responding officers.

In Portland, protesters just toppled statues of Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln during a “day of rage”, but the mainstream media didn’t seem to think that this was any sort of a problem.

And in the middle of the country, the violence never seems to stop in the city of Chicago

Five people were killed and 48 others were injured by gunfire this weekend in Chicago. Five of those wounded were teenagers.

Last weekend saw 37 people shot throughout the city, five of them fatally.

Of course, things could soon get a whole lot worse.

According to one recent survey, 56 percent of all Americans expect “an increase in violence as a result of the election”.

Isn’t that incredibly sad?

Many are still hoping that such a scenario can be avoided if one of the candidates is able to build an extremely large lead on election night.  A large enough lead could potentially cause the candidate that is behind to concede fairly quickly, and that may ease tensions.

But I wouldn’t count on that.

At this point, we are about 500 hours away from the election, and both sides are indicating that they are prepared to fight until the bitter end.

And the side that ultimately ends up losing is likely to throw a massive temper tantrum, and that won’t be good for our country at all.

So it makes sense that so many Americans are making extra preparations for the months that are ahead because it definitely appears that they could be quite rocky.

“Darkest Winter?” DHS “Prepares” For EMP Attack

The Department of Homeland Security wants you to believe that they give a damn about us. So, they are “preparing” for the “dark winter” we’ve been promised.

DHS says, in its own government document that it needs to “combat” and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack that could drop the nation’s power grid for a substantial amount of time. If we have learned anything over the past 8 months, its that when the government “prepares” for something, it’s actually making us a promise. Will this be any different?

Richie from Boston noticed the link between a “dark winter” and the DHS’s EMP announcement as well. Richie has been heavily censored on YouTube for speaking against the government and their assistance in pushing us into the New World Order, or Agenda 21. This document might end up foretelling the literal dark winter we were warned of.

The COVID-19 “Dark Winter” PsyOp: Question Everything…

As Richie has said several times before: get ready. “These dudes are going to do this!”

Read the DHS’ “Program Status Report here.

What If Your Preparedness Plan Isn’t As Sound As You Think?

“I’ve been warning you they are gonna do this, and then here they come,” says Richue. The elites have been advertising their plans to us if we decide to pay attention. “They’re gonna knock out the power!” If you haven’t figured out a way to et water without power and a way to eat, please do so now. Buckle up, folks. With the vaccine coming on November 1, a likely EMP attack, and the contested election, we have a bumpy remainder of 2020 to look forward to.

Agenda 21 Requires Martial Law

“Here comes the promised ‘darkest winter in modern history,’” Richie says. Prepare, stay alert, and be aware of what’s going on. Itis becoming more imperative than ever that you wake up and realize the reality of the situation we are in.  This can have a great ending, but we need to stand together and reject the government and the guys pulling their strings for good (the last form of slavery). Their power is all in your perception.  The truth is, no one has power over you. You own yourself.

In the meantime, prepare, and stay in the loop. Knowledge is half the battle especially right now in this spiritual/mental warfare and psyop games being played on us.

Blame California Cool CRISIS demand Economy emergency Emergency Preparedness energy providers failure Gavin Newsom grid Headline News Intelwars Operations power Prepare rolling blackouts summer heat

Rolling Blackouts In California, Easy Ways To Prepare

California is experiencing its first rolling blackouts in 19 years.  While there’s plenty of blame to go around, there’s not much actual planning or preparation for such an event.

As more power outages loom, there still is no clear cause for the blackouts, according to the mainstream media.  That’s been causing everyone to point fingers. Energy experts on Monday cited a litany of potential causes for the rotating outages that affected hundreds of thousands of California residents Friday and Saturday nights. According to Politico, some of the reasons for the rolling blackouts could be ballooning demand, inadequate transmission, an overreliance on renewable energy, and the incursion of new energy providers that don’t have the same obligation to maintain reserves as traditional utilities do.

Governor Gavin Newsom, who is already loathed over his heavy-handed tyrannical response to the coronavirus panic, questioned all of the state’s electricity players about why the outages occurred and faced blowback from frustrated residents.

Earlier Monday, the California Independent System Operator blamed Friday’s outages on “high heat and increased electricity demand.” Yet some energy experts noted that demand wasn’t particularly higher than normal, as is typical for weekends, and CAISO had predicted it would have adequate reserves on hand for the 80 percent of California’s grid that it manages.

“What’s weird about what happened is they were adequate until they weren’t,” said Michael Wara, director of Stanford University’s climate and energy program and a member of the state’s Catastrophic Wildfire Cost and Recovery Commission. “It seems as if certain power plants for some reason we’re not able to deliver on the commitments to supply reserves and also supply energy.” –Politico

Regardless of the reason for the blackouts, Californians will face more of them in the upcoming days. The state’s grid operator held off for a second straight night, citing cooler than expected weather and widespread conservation.

To prepare for rolling blackouts in the summer do the following:

  1. Freeze large containers (water bottles, Tupperware, etc.) of water to keep food cool in a cooler. A typical freezer/refrigerator will keep food cool for about 48 hours.
  2. Fully charge your medical device(s) and consider securing backup power if you rely on power for your device(s).
  3. Keep extra water on hand in during the summer months to stay hydrated.  Without air conditioning, temperatures can soar quickly.
  4. Have some cash on hand and make sure to keep fuel in your vehicle.
  5. Make sure flashlights have batteries.
  6. Keep your bug out bag/emergency bag/vehicle bag in an easy-to-grab spot in case you need to use things in it.

Stay safe, cool, and prepared.

Air Force helicopter hit by gunfire while flying over Virginia, forced to make emergency landing

An Air Force helicopter was hit by gunfire Monday while flying over Virginia, damaging it and forcing it to make an emergency landing at a regional airport, officials told McClatchy DC. A crew member also was injured, the outlet said.

What are the details?

The UH-1N Huey helicopter — assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron at Joint Base Andrews — was flying about 1,000 feet off the ground about 10 miles northwest of Manassas Regional Airport when the incident occurred, the outlet said, citing an Air Force statement.

The injured crew member, who was not identified, was treated and released from a hospital, McClatchy said.

“Initial findings are that the helicopter was struck by a bullet resulting in a minor injury to an aircrew member and damage to the aircraft,” the Air Force said, according to the outlet.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, McClatchy added.

The FBI “dispatched special agents and its Evidence Response Team to the Manassas Airport after receiving reports that a helicopter was shot at from the ground nearby,” the FBI’s Washington Field Office said in a statement, according to the outlet.

More from McClatchy:

Officials at Manassas Regional Airport said they received a call at about 12:20 p.m. alerting them that “a military helicopter was inbound and that paramedics were on the way,” said airport operations officer Richard Allabaugh.

A second airport official said the injured Air Force crew member was taken to a local facility for treatment. The helicopter remained at the airport as an investigation was launched into the shooting incident.

“The FBI Washington Field Office is working jointly with our law enforcement partners, including the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. One individual in the helicopter sustained a non-threatening injury, for which he was treated and subsequently released from the hospital,” the FBI said, according to the outlet, and added that “anyone near this area at the time of the incident who may have information please call the FBI at 202-278-2000.”

Joint Base Andrews said it had no further details to release, McClatchy noted.

“The Office of Special Investigations is fully engaged with our FBI colleagues on this incident. OSI take threats to our Airmen and our resources very seriously. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further investigative details can be released at this time,” Joint Base Andrews said, according the outlet.

California Earthquakes emergency Emergency Preparedness experts Headline News Intelwars larger quake magnitude natural disaster Palm Springs Prepare risk elevated Salton Sea san andreas fault swarm the big one United States Geological Survey

The Big One? San Andreas Fault Earthquake Swarms

In the aftermath of a recent swarm of earthquakes on the San Andreas fault, seismologists say the chance of larger quake is “significantly elevated.” The “Big One” is making headlines once again.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the dozens of tremors began in the early morning on Monday, ranging in size from a 2.6 magnitude quake to a 4.6 magnitude quake northwest of Palm Springs and the Salton Sea. This swarm has reignited the fears of the “big one.”

The area is overdue for a “Big One.” Larger-scale quakes on the San Andreas Fault are expected every 200 years on average, and the southern area has not seen action since 1680 to 1690, according to a report by Fox News. The swarm marks only the fourth time in almost 90 years of modern seismology records that such an incident has occurred in that part of the Golden State.

“During this earthquake swarm, the probability of larger earthquakes in this region is significantly greater than usual. The southernmost section of the San Andreas Fault is capable of rupturing in large-magnitude earthquakes (magnitude 7+), but the last earthquake that strong was more than 300 years ago,” the Geological Survey said in a Monday statement.

“In a typical week, there is approximately a 1-in-10,000 chance of a magnitude 7+ earthquake on the southernmost San Andreas Fault. That probability is significantly elevated while swarm activity remains high,” they wrote. A calculated 1-in-100 chance of a high-magnitude quake in the next week is a worrying rise from the normal 1-in-10,000 odds.

Earthquakes: What To Expect, What To Do During A Quake, And How To Prepare

Be prepared for anything.  While this could be fear-mongering, if you live in the area of this swarm, it may something you should pay attention to.  Get your bug out bag ready and make sure your entire family knows what to do if a massive earthquake hits.

Forgetting Something? 5 Overlooked Bug Out Bag Items

Brace yourselves for a crazy end to 2020.  I have no idea if there will be an earthquake or not on the San Andres, however, other events the mainstream media is attempting to control the narrative on will surface later this year, and it’s important to be as prepared as you can be for almost anything.

Prepping: 15 Things That Will Happen When The Economy Finally Collapses

We should all be prepared for what’s coming next.  In order to prepare effectively, we need to know what will happen when the economy finally collapses under its own weight.  The creation of money out of thin air could only go on for so long, and we are approaching the end.

Epic Economist put together a great video detailing the 15 things (and yes, some are a little scary) that will happen when the economy collapses.  At this point in time and history, it is no surprise that an economic collapse is coming for us. When the world’s largest economy is deep down in a recession, many other countries will not be late to follow the same path.

The financial breakdown the world is about to face over the next few years will be an unprecedented catastrophe, especially considering that the underlying problems from previous crashes were never fixed, only mended together. A real repair would require a complete restructuration in the system, and the elites were never interested in fixing the system that they set up to screw the rest of us.

These are the 15 things that will happen that you should be prepared for:

1 -Fuel Shortages, or rationing of fuel

2 -Carjackings rise

3- Interstate Trucking is compromised, limiting the supply of essential goods

4-Defaults in garbage disposal and urban sanitation

5- Food scarcity, a disruption in food supply chains

6-Water quality drops

7-The population gets on survival mode, one example of this could be the slaughtering of zoo animals for food.

8-Pets go missing

9-Civil agitation leads to turbulence in the streets

10-Attacks become more frequent

11-Kidnappings Increase

12-Gang Activity Increases

13-Banks Close

14-Hospitals become Overloaded

15-  Martial Law Enacted

Knowing that these things are likely to happen when the economy collapses should help give you an idea of what you’re going to need to be prepared.  Make sure you know how to defend yourself and your family. Make sure you have a way to filter water.  You will need to be able to avoid crowds and live on your own, potentially off the grid. Prepping: Foods to Buy For The Upcoming Economic Depression

As Tess Pennington says in her best selling preparedness book The Prepper’s Blueprint: “If we have learned one thing studying the history of disasters, it is this: those who are prepared have a better chance at survival than those who are not.”  The time to prepare financially for an economic depression was last year, but there are a few food preps you can get now to reduce spending over the next six months.

Storing at least six months’ worth of foods can go far in beginning a preparedness program on your own.  Keep in mind, you should consider your climate and environment (meaning you may be able to garden, or you may have a short season.)  You should also think of items you can add to barter with.  Think about what you could trade someone else for foods you may not have thought of or foods you can store and trade for other useful items.  In the event of another Great Depression, you will need to be able to barter if you have no money.

5 Foods You Can Be Stockpiling All The Time To Enhance Your Food Inventory

10 Items To Help You Start Your Emergency Food Storage

After all, people cannot eat gold or cash, so having items on hand that could be useful to many will help you get through. I have been storing the largest bottles of olive oil I can find.  I know there’s a small chance I’ll use it all, but when the prices are good, I’ve been stocking up. Here are a few other items myself, and other preppers suggest you store:

Canned Goods – Just start getting as much of these as possible. Store vegetables and fruits as well as beans and soups. You should also have some kind of canned meat, such as chicken, tuna, or spam.

Peanut Butter – A great source of energy, peanut butter is chock-full of healthy fats and protein. Unless the jar indicates otherwise, you don’t have to refrigerate after opening.

Rice – this is kind of a no-brainer, but it’s an easy filler for meals.

Dry beans – much like rice, this can be a great filler.

Wheat – using wheat will enable you to make bread, which can be filling during an emergency.

Make sure you have a can opener, and continually add to your food supply.  You will also want to know how to safely collect water and filer it.

Prepping: DIY Rainwater Harvesting System

Survival Water Filter DIY – What to do in an Emergency!

I personally, like the Life Straws, but others prefer the Sawyer water filter. Make sure you have something to filer water in your bug out bag.  It may be necessary to leave your preps in order to survive, and you’ll want to make sure you can drink water safely without getting sick first and foremost.

Forgetting Something? 5 Overlooked Bug Out Bag Items

Across the ages, in every survival story, a disaster of some sort plays a prominent role. Sometimes the part is played by the government, sometimes it is played by Mother Nature, and other times, the role is taken on by a random mishap. If we have learned one thing studying the history of disasters, it is this: those who are prepared have a better chance at survival than those who are not. A crisis rarely stops with a triggering event. The aftermath can spiral, having the capacity to cripple our normal ways of life. Because of this, it’s important to have a well-rounded approach to our preparedness efforts. Due to the overwhelming nature of preparedness, we have created the Prepper’s Blueprint to help get you and your family ready for life’s unexpected emergencies. To make a more comprehensive, easy-to-follow program, The Prepper’s Blueprint has been simplified and divided up in a way to help you make sense of all the preparedness concepts and supply lists provided. We have divided the chapters into layers of preparedness.

Prepping: DIY Rainwater Harvesting System

Water storage can be a big problem for those with limited space and no well.  But there is a way to still prepare for your water needs in the event of a long term emergency.  You can use a Do-it-yourself rainwater harvesting system.

There is more than one way to go about creating your own system to have water when the SHTF. Additionally, rainwater harvesting is one of the most self-sufficient and environment-friendly methods of using water. You are collecting water from the sky as it falls, all the while trying to utilize is as much as you can, and without a price tag looming on it.

The average roof collects 600 gallons (2,271.2 L) of water for every inch of rainfall and you can make a rainwater collection system for under a hundred dollars and store hundreds of gallons of water to use for your garden or other purposes.  Make sure you have a filtration system in place before drinking this water just to be safe.

Please be aware that some states have banned rainwater collection and harvesting.

Installing a simple rain barrel to collect water is pretty easy. Through this do-it-yourself tutorial, you can make it in no time and start harvesting water in just four steps. Connecting a rain barrel system to the rainwater drainage pipes is an efficient way of collecting rainwater. What I also like about this tutorial is the reliance on visuals to explain the process, which is always helpful, especially to those who are new to prepping.

What You’ll Need

Obtain one or more water storage barrels. We suggest a food-grade BPA-free plastic water storage barrel (in case this water needs to be used for human consumption). A rain barrel can also be made from a large plastic trash can if you are on a budget and intend to use the water only in a garden or for washing. You’ll want a barrel that will hold 30 to 55 gallons (113.6 to 208.2 L) of water.

  • If you decide to get a used barrel, make sure that it didn’t formerly contain oil, pesticides, or any other type of toxic substance. It’s too difficult to clean these chemicals from the inside of the barrel, so using them is too risky.
  • If you plan on collecting a lot of water, get two or three barrels. You’ll be able to connect them so they’re all part of the same water collection system and this way you can have hundreds of gallons of water at your disposal.
  • 1 standard 1-inch hose spigot with ¾-in. pipe threads, so you can access water from your rain barrel.
  • 1 ¾-inch x ¾-inch coupling
  • 1 ¾-inch x ¾-inch bushing
  • 1 ¾-inch pipe thread with a 1-inch hose adapter
  • 1 ¾-inch lock nut
  • 4 metal washers
  • 1 roll Teflon thread tape
  • 1 tube silicone caulk
  • 1 “S”-shaped aluminum downspout elbow, to direct water from your downspout to your rain barrel
  • 1 piece of aluminum window screen, to keep leaves, bugs and other materials out of your water
  • 4-6 concrete blocks

Once you’ve got the supplies needed, level the area next to your downspout by clearing away any debris. Make sure you’ve cleared an area big enough to fit all the barrels you’d like to use. Put down a layer of pea gravel. This will provide better drainage around the rain barrels and help keep water away from the foundation of your home. Dig a 5-inch deep rectangle in the area you leveled to accommodate the rain barrels, and fill it with 1?2 inch (1.3 cm) of pea gravel. If you are putting barrels on concrete, don’t worry about the pea gravel. Stack the concrete blocks on the pea gravel to create a raised platform for your rainwater barrels.

Drill a spigot hole in the side of your barrel. It should be high enough up on the barrel to fit a bucket or water jug underneath. Make a 3/4-inch hole to properly fit the spigot you bought. Use caulk on both the inside and outside of the hole. Put the spigot and the coupling together. Use Teflon tape to wrap the threaded ends to create a tight seal and prevent leakage. Put a washer on the threaded end of the coupling and insert it through the hole in the barrel from the outside. Slip another washer over the pipe from the inside. Attach the bushing to hold the spigot in place.

(For pictures, please click here or watch the video below)

Next, make an overflow valve. Click here for detailed instructions if you are using more than one barrel. Put a filer at the top of the downspout so leaves and debris stay out of your water. Connect the downspout using the “S” elbow to your rain barrels.

This is just a simple way to start collecting rainwater, and there is more than one way to do this.  Make it work for you and your situation.  Prepping really isn’t a “one size fits all” deal.  We all have different setups and needs, so create something that works for you.  If something doesn’t work in this guide, scrap it and find what does work. We simply hope this gives you ideas on how to better prepare for an emergency.

Also, if you are new to prepping, don’t worry about trying this! We all started somewhere and as you get more ideas, you’ll be able to discover new and innovative ways to make things work for you in your current situation. Most preppers are here to help and offer advice that’s worked for them personally. If nothing else, you’ll come away with some great ideas on how to advance your preparedness.

Prepping Tips: Store Fresh Fruits & Vegetables For Months Without Refrigeration

Based on the current situation with the pandemic and people emptying grocery stores because of it, there’s a desire to want to keep your vegetables fresh as long as possible. It’s possible to get more life out of them when utilizing cold storage.

Most preppers will use this method of storage in the fall after harvesting their crop for the year from their own garden. But it can be used to keep store-bought produce fresh too, even though those vegetables are not as fresh. This method won’t work for all fruits and vegetables, but most can be stored this way.

Also, keep in mind, cold storage won’t work in places where it stays warm year-round, or climates that don’t get a “full winter.” Your vegetables also won’t last forever. When planting this spring, choose your vegetables wisely (what will grow well in your area and what will store well based on climate). Keep an eye on them throughout the winter and don’t be shy about using them!

Follow These General Rules of Food Storage

  1. Store only fully mature vegetables. Immature fruits and vegetables will rot quickly. Hold off harvesting as long as possible, especially with root vegetables that can withstand some frost.
  2. Do not store vegetables that have been bruised or nicked or that show the slightest sign of rot. Be careful when handling them.
  3. Remove all excess soil. Don’t wash the vegetables, just let them dry and brush off the soil. You can wash them well before using them.
  4. Thoroughly clean your storage area before each use.
  5. Keep the storage area dark.
  6. Do not expose stored vegetables to temperatures below freezing.
  7. Check on your stored vegetables every week or two. Storage times are just approximations since vegetables, temperatures, and conditions can vary widely.
  8. Use vegetables taken from cold storage as soon as possible. They will not last as long as they would if they had been freshly picked.

You should also consider which vegetables need dry storage and which will require moist storage. The Spruce has a great article detailing the storage conditions for each vegetable.

  • Dry vegetables: (winter squash, pumpkins, onions, garlic) require less effort to store, but they need more space. Since indoor humidity is low during the winter, make use of any unused, dark spaces and corners. These vegetables store best if they are kept up off the floor and are not allowed to touch each other. If you must pile things on top of each other, you will need to check them more frequently.
  • Moist vegetables: (potatoes, root crops, cabbages) should be stored in a container, rather than exposed to air. Traditional methods include storing them in peat, sand, sawdust or newspaper, but you can also use plastic bags or cardboard. If you choose to use plastic, make sure there are a few holes, for excess moisture to escape. To contain the odor of stored cabbages, you can wrap them in a couple of sheets of newspaper first.

LOCATIONS:

You likely have one of the following places available in your home to storage some healthy vegetables over the winter months.

  • Basements – Cool, dry basements (50 – 60 F and 60 – 65 % relative humidity) will keep most vegetables fresh for at least a couple of months. Make sure the vegetables have good air circulation and some ventilation.
  • Attics and Entryways – If these spaces are unheated, they can be used for spreading out and storing vegetables that like dry conditions. Even an unheated spare room can be put to use storing a few winter squashes on dressers or tabletops.
  • Root Cellars – For ideal cold, moist conditions, (32 – 40 F and 90 – 95% relative humidity), consider a root cellar. A root cellar can be anything that remains above freezing, from a bucket in the ground, to a crawl space under the porch, to an unheated section of the basement, to a cement enclosure build into the side of a hill. Even in a root cellar, the vegetables will need ventilation and probably some insulation against temperature fluctuations. You also need to ensure that rodents cannot get to them.

Take the time to look up each vegetable and the conditions they need to be stored in. Not all are the same.  To make things more simple, you can choose to plant vegetables that will all store in relatively similar conditions, and that will make things much easier.

Last Minute Quarantine Preps You Can Buy From Home

As much of the country is practicing social distancing in order to contain the coronavirus, fear has taken over the masses and people are wiping out grocery stores. While we advocate being prepared, fear doesn’t do anyone any good and that’s becoming more apparent by the day.

Because the public was largely unprepared for a pandemic, there isn’t much left to grab in stores.  Being in a crowded store right now is one of the last things preppers want to do anyway.  But there may be a few things you forgot to grab, so I’ve done my best to find items you can get from the comfort of your own home.

ITEMS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING

N100 Face Mask

12 Cans of Beans and Franks

Bulk Black Beans in a storage bucket

Toilet Paper

Baby Wipes

Bidet (attachable to toilet) & Handheld Bidet – could free up your toilet paper stash to be bartered with

Feminine Hygiene: reusable menstrual cup

Bulk Rice in storage bucket

24 cans of Peas

Basic First Aid Kit

Water filtration straws (LifeStraws)

These are some things that are still available online for purchase if you find yourself running low.  Personally, I also purchased the following after an audit of my own supplies:

12 lighters

Water purification tablets

Aloe Vera Gel (can be used on cuts or burns and in making hand sanitizer)

Quick Clotting Gauze

Hydrogen Peroxide

2-pack liquid soap for the family

A lot of the items preppers suggest get stockpiled have sold out. Anything labeled “emergency food” is almost impossible to find, so at this point, it’s time to make due with what we can get. The panicked masses have finally decided preparedness is a good thing, but their fear is not only destroying the economy, but it’s making essentials difficult to come by.

Trying to desperately control this virus and the installment of fear in the public by the mainstream media is doing a lot more damage than the virus itself could ever hope to do to our society.

RESPIRATORY DISTRESS: Gold Nosedives – MOTHER BAILOUT DISCHARGED!

This article was contributed by Lior Gantz at The Wealth Research Group.

Coronavirus is now, QUITE HONESTLY, one of the worst disasters to come upon the human race since WW2. The quantity of casualties worldwide is about 7,000 – which, compared with the 50,000 deaths a day caused by malnutrition, the 400,000 deaths a year caused by smoking, and the hundreds of thousands of deaths every year caused by car accidents and alcoholism, is NOTHING, but the prevention of further spread comes at an unbearable cost to economies.

The real ISSUE in this matter is not that the virus has brought about untold tragedies, but that the LACK OF proper ways of containing the virus do not exist, without MASS-SCALE quarantines and OUTLAWING INTERACTIONS.

The trade-off to eradicating the virus and of limiting the death toll, when it comes to the price paid by the global economy, is that all of our major industries have FLICKED THEIR SWITCHES OFF.

Collectively, as societies, we are SUBJECTING OURSELVES to this crisis, in a financial sense, in order to potentially save many lives. The combination of public fear and of the medical professionals, who DO NOT wish to UNDERSTATE the lethality of Covid-19, has painted us into a corner, along with governors, U.S.-bound, and heads of state, globally, who just WILL NOT risk taking responsibility for this contagious outbreak happening under their watch.

As a global society, we have decided that in the field of pandemics, we hold authorities accountable for coming up with SOLUTIONS and the eyes of the world are on WASHINGTON.

Courtesy: Zerohedge.com

The U.S. economy is, without a doubt, ENTERING an earnings recession with each passing hour. What the Federal Reserve has done, by cutting interest rates to ZERO in a full-on EMERGENCY manner, is to allow credit markets to FUNCTION, since they were PUSHING THE ENVELOPE.

Literally, had the central bank not done this, yesterday we would have seen dollar shortages worldwide. We could have experienced market closures, a bank holiday, lines at the ATMs and curfews, with police patrolling the streets.

The Federal Reserve threw itself on a live grenade to save credit facilitation and bond liquidity but TOOK ITSELF out of the game completely.

They will now be buying bonds and Mortgage-Backed-Securities, an OFFICIAL QE5 program launch, but they will not INTRODUCE negative rates.

Courtesy: Zerohedge.com

Before the FED intervention, the bond markets were close to SHOUTING MAYDAY. The entire planet wanted dollars and there weren’t enough to go around.

The same goes for physical gold. While the price of paper ETFs is falling, in a couple of days, you will not be able to EASILY get your hands on the real thing. Due to OUTRAGEOUSLY high demand and supply chain constraints, both gold and silver, which have dropped like a rock to the bottom of the ocean on the TOTALLY MANIPULATED paper exchanges, are UNATTAINABLE in material form.

Because the Federal Reserve is wounded and left on the sidelines, I expect the MOTHER OF ALL BAILOUTS to start being deployed by the government and by international organization, which are U.S.-centric, such as the IMF and the World Bank.

This is a global pandemic and, as many have feared, the response will be globally-coordinated, opening the DANGEROUS doors to a one-world currency and global governance STRUCTURE.

Don’t think for a second that power-starved globalist key players aren’t looking to FULLY capitalize on the suffering of others and become their heroes in this time of crisis.

Make no mistake about it: the levels of FEAR on the street are HUMUNGOUS. I surveyed several mentors of mine, who were so bearish that I nearly used it as a CONTRARIAN indicator that the worst is behind us.

What you want to see before making a large allocation is the indication of higher highs. For now, we’ve broken below the December 2018 lows, so the floor is that 1,800-2,200 for the S&P 500, the level it traded when Donald Trump made an upset and won the 2016 presidential elections.

Courtesy: Zerohedge.com

At this point, as you can see, the fear of the public, especially with the PROSPECT of a lawful house curfew, mandated by the federal authorities, is SIGNALING DISTRESS.

Obviously, ZERO interest rates and QE programs are not enough to make investors BELIEVE the crisis has been contained.

In a few days, companies will begin releasing their emergency measures, mostly in the fields of manpower, coupled with the publication of FRESH unemployment numbers and we will need a BILL, signed by the SENATE, which assists the misfortunate.

Nothing else will suffice.

The markets are UTTERLY CONCERNED that after nearly one full term of VERBAL VIOLENCE between the Democrats and the Republicans, they will drag their feet, rather than be one step ahead of the economy, IN UNISON.

By this Friday, we will have an ADEQUATE amount of data and we could, with higher certainty, form a decision on BUYING THE DIP or staying in cash even longer.

How To Make Homemade Disinfecting Surface Wipes

This article was originally published by Tess Pennington on her website Ready Nutrition.

It’s important to keep surfaces clean and disinfected – especially during a pandemic emergency. Because the coronavirus can live on surfaces for up to a few days, keeping up your cleaning regimen is essential to your health and the continued sanitation of the home.

The CDC recommends disinfecting areas where there can be large numbers of household germs — and where there is a possibility that these germs could be spread to others. Here are some hotspots to hit: doorknobs, faucet handles, toilet flushers, bathrooms, phones, keyboards, remote controls, countertops, and tables. Keeping your hard surfaces clean is essential during the flu season. Here is an easy way to keep the cleaning as convenient as possible.

Moreover, they suggest the best way to keep a home clean is by using these guidelines:

  • Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
  • Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

Since we all love the convenience of cleaning wipes, here’s an easy way to make them.

Here’s What You Need:
  • 1 roll of paper towels
  • Clorox
  • Water
  • Plastic cleaning container for wipes (I like to reuse old Clorox wipes containers)

Homemade Disinfecting Surface Wipes

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add bleach and dish soap to water; stir well.
  2. Cut paper towel roll to fit into the desired container.*
  3. Pour enough solution over paper towel roll to fully absorb (2-4 cups).
  4. Remove the cardboard center from paper towel roll.
  5. Pull pieces of paper towel (wipes) from the center hole of the roll.
  6. Cover surface; allow to sit for 5 full minutes.
  7. Wipe with a wet cloth; air dry.

NOTES

There is always some of the disinfecting solution left over. Add it to a spray bottle for another use. Cotton towels can also be placed in the solution, used, laundered and reused.

This is a simple way to repurpose your old Clorox wipes containers and save a few dollars by making your own.

Illinois mayor issues coronavirus emergency that gives her the power to ban the sale of guns, ammo, alcohol, and more

Deborah Frank Feinen, the mayor of Champaign, Illinois, issued a coronavirus-related emergency declaration Friday that could allow her office to ban the sale of guns, ammunition, and alcohol for a limited time.

The emergency declaration reportedly gives Feinen’s office “extraordinary powers” and was made despite there being no confirmed coronavirus cases in central Illinois as of Thursday evening, according to a report by WAND-TV.

The news outlet noted that the city’s municipal code grants the mayor authority to declare an emergency for a limited time and goes on to list several of the powers allotted to the mayor in such an instance:

  • Ban sale of firearms and ammunition;
  • Ban sale of any alcohol;
  • Closing of all bars, taverns, liquor stores, etc;
  • Ban sale or giving away of gasoline or other liquid flammable or combustible products in any container other than a gasoline tank permanently fixed to a motor vehicle;
  • Direct the shutoff of power, water, gas, etc;
  • Take possession of private property and obtain full title to same ;and
  • Prohibit or restrict ingress and egress to and from the City.
According to the City of Champaign’s communications manager, Jeff Hamilton, “the executive order allows the city to be flexible to properly respond to the emergency needs of our community.”
He added that “none of the options will necessarily will be implemented but are available in order to protect the welfare and safety of our community if needed.”
At an emergency meeting on Friday morning, the city council unanimously approved that the ordinance, effectively placing the city under a local emergency. The ordinance will reportedly be in place for 28 days.
“Making sure that we are prepared and ready for any eventuality. I hope all of this is for naught and that none of the emergency measures we’ve put into place are necessary,” Feinen said after the ordinance was passed.
