Hostage situation in Oregon ends with 3 dead, including 11-year-old boy

A hostage situation in Oregon on Monday ended with three people dead, including the suspected hostage-taker and an 11-year-old boy.

What are the details?

Oregon State Police reported that the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in Salem, where deputies were able to establish communications with suspect Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco, 34. During the talks, gunshots rang out from the residence where Lopez-Tinoco was holed up, leading officers to force their way in.

The news released from the state police says that “during the rescue one deputy fired a yet to be determined number of rounds.”

Once inside, deputies discovered Lopez-Tinoco dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. They also found 24-year-old Laura Bustos-Bustos dead from a gunshot wound, and an 11-year-old boy who had also been fatally shot.

Another woman, 43-year-old Laura Rocia-Bustos was found alive inside the home and was transported to a hospital with serious injuries after being shot. A 13-year-old boy was found physically unharmed.

Neither of the boys’ names will be released.

What about the deputy?

The officer who discharged his service weapon, Deputy Ricky Kittelson, has been placed on administrative leave per protocol as the investigation continues.

The New York Post noted that “it was not revealed if any of the injuries were believed to have been from the officer’s shots,” and “officials also did not reveal what sparked the hostage situation, nor the relationship between Lopez-Tinoco and the victims.”

A neighbor who watched the scene unfold from the outside shared footage with local outlet KOIN-TV that she had taken from her home during the tragic situation.

Oregon police department removing blue line from patrol vehicles over ‘divisive use of the Thin Blue Line symbol’

The police department in Bend, Oregon, announced that the blue line on its patrol vehicles is being removed — and the move is happening due to how the Thin Blue Line symbol has been interpreted.

What are the details?

“The ‘Thin Blue Line’ has meant many things over the decades,” the department said in a Facebook
post Thursday. “The divisive use of the Thin Blue Line symbol to fit a narrative unassociated with our department or what we stand for has unintentionally created an ongoing divide between some members of our community and the police officers who serve them.”

The post added that “in the spirit of mending divide, being inclusive with the community we serve, and to continue to build trust within our entire community, our current and future vehicle graphics package will no longer contain a blue line. Moving forward, we will be looking for a design that incorporates a way to honor members of our first responder family who have given their life in service of their communities. Our goal is to have a symbol created that blends seamlessly with our existing mountain graphics.”

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz
told KTVZ-TV Thursday that the blue line originally was intended as a blue horizon behind the mountain graphics on the patrol cars, but due to nationwide backlash against all things Thin Blue Line-related, negative interpretations abounded.

“The intent of the blue line with the black background is, of course, for current law enforcement … the memorial, the ultimate sacrifice of giving your life and service of your community,” Krantz told the station.

The police chief noted to KTVZ that he made the decision to remove the blue vinyl decals two weeks ago.

“Some community members view it as an important piece on our cars, others view it as a barrier between the police and the community, so it’s my role to evaluate that and look at how we can best serve the entire community,” Krantz added to the station.

Anything else?

Patrol cars for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office — Bend is located in Deschutes County — display a horizontal blue line across the back, and a few of the officers’ vehicles show the black-and-white Thin Blue Line American flag, KTVZ said.

But Lt. William Bailey told the station that the sheriff’s office “is not removing them.”

Other examples

Bend isn’t the first police department to crack down on the Thin Blue Line:

Even more recently, an Ohio nonprofit awarded a scholarship to two high school football players who were suspended from school after carrying a Thin Blue Line flag and a Thin Red Line flag before a Sept. 11 game.

And football players at a Florida high school were banned from running onto the field before games carrying a Thin Blue Line flag after complaints that the flag was racist and fears from school administrators that it was viewed as a political statement.

Armed Oregon woman holds suspected arsonist at gunpoint until cops arrive

As wildfires rage along the West Coast, law enforcement has nabbed several suspected arsonists, including multiple arrests in Oregon.

One armed Oregonian was ready to defend her property — and her state — from the actions of a suspected would-be arsonist, and now her story is going viral on social media.

What happened?

Kat Cast posted a video to Facebook over the weekend showing her taking action to get a man she believed to be an arsonist off her property, on the ground, and eventually into the back of a police vehicle and the local clink.

In the video, Cast can been seen getting out of her car with gun drawn and approaching a suspicious man who was walking on her property.

According to Cast’s Facebook post, she said she found the man walking on her property as she was driving in. All he was carrying was a book of matches, Cast stated.

Some of you still think we’re not being under attack. I found this individual walking in my property as I was driving in, all he had were some matches in his hand. Walked him out of my property at gunpoint and then when we got to some asphalt ground on the main road made him lay down while the cops arrived.

In the video, the suspect lies down on the road as Cast approaches him, shouting, “Get on the floor. Get on the floor right now — face down.”

“What are you doing on my property?” she asks, to which the suspect replies that he didn’t know it was her property.

“Did you light anything on fire?” she continues.

“No, ma’am,” he replies.

Then she demands to know what he’s doing with the book of matches, and he claims he smokes.

“You smoke? Where are your f***ing cigarettes?” the woman demands to know.

Turns out he didn’t have any cigarettes — just matches he was carrying around in his hand while strolling along her property.

Cast tells the suspect to stay on the ground because the police were on their way: “You can just stay right there. I’ve got the cops coming’.”

Shortly after the video stopped, Cast said, cops did arrive and take the man into custody.

According to Cast’s Facebook post, the suspect has “multiple warrants one of them being assaulting a police officer.”

Cast also made it clear that the suspect should consider himself lucky that she found him and not her husband.

“Had my husband been here he would have been dead,” she wrote.

Blowback and encouragement

In an update to her post, Cast noted that many people, including the media, had been reaching out to her about the story. Many, she said, doubted her story and said it looked staged, but most of the comments were supportive.

Because she did not want more stress put on her family, she said she would not be talking to the media about the incident.

I read all your msgs to me, even the private ones, I can tell you that this truly did happen and there is nothing fake about it, I do not wish to keep private msgs between you and I, not with you or the dozens of people who are reaching out to me. Some with terrifying words, but mostly I am truly humbled by many kind words that have been said to me. I do not wish to speak to anyone, it doesn’t matter to me if it’s a journalist who wants to put out on the news, I will not put my family in danger by exposing myself any more than what I have already, besides the media will just twist my words. Feel free to use the pictures that you have obtained if you want but I will not interview with anyone. Man arrested in Portland for starting fire with Molotov cocktail — allegedly sets 6 more upon release

Police in Portland, Oregon, say they arrested a man Sunday who admitted to lighting a brush fire using a Molotov cocktail, and arrested the same suspect hours later following his release from custody after he allegedly set six more fires.

What are the details?

The Portland Police Bureau issued a news release stating that officers arrested Domingo Lopez Jr., 45, on Sunday afternoon after a witness pointed to him as the person who used a Molotov cocktail to set a fire along Interstate-205 freeway that officers had just helped fire officials extinguish. Lopez “confirmed he lit the fire with the device,” according to police.

Officers recovered a plastic bottle with a wick and seized it as evidence, posting a photo of it in their report.

Lopez was charged with reckless burning and disorderly conduct in the second degree for his Sunday arrest, and arson investigators are probing to determine whether further charges may be brought in that incident.

At 3:37 a.m. the next day, officers and Portland Fire and Rescue were dispatched again “to a report of multiple fires burning along the west side of the I-205 freeway.”

Police reported in a second news release:

Portland Fire and Rescue extinguished three of them while passing community members put out the other three. All were caught early. No one was injured and no structures were burnt. Officers located Domingo Lopez, Junior walking along the shoulder and arrested him. They seized a lighter as evidence.

Lopez was charged with six additional counts of reckless burning in connection to his Monday arrest.

Fox News noted that “wildfires, of course, have been burning more than one million acres in Oregon.”

The Oregonian reported that as of Saturday, seven people had been confirmed dead from wildfires in the state and dozens more were missing in a catastrophe that officials warn could be a “mass fatality incident.”

In a separate report Monday, The Oregonian noted:

Law enforcement, including Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts, have tried to bat down unfounded rumors of coordinated arson plans and widespread looting in evacuated areas, saying there was no evidence to back them up. Sheriff’s offices across the state, along with the FBI, have roundly debunked the claims.

Roberts said during a news conference Sunday, “There’s just a lot of misinformation about folks trying to set fires. I want to reassure everybody that we are on this and if you see anything suspicious, I encourage you to call us.”

‘You loot, we shoot’: Armed property owners in Oregon threaten would-be lawbreakers amid wildfires

Some residents in Clackamas County, Oregon, have taken to posting roadside signs warning potential lawbreakers that if they’re caught looting or setting fires, they may find themselves facing the wrong end of a gun — and feeling the pain of a bullet.

encountered a number of such warning signs as the state battles huge wildfires:

How are folks reacting to the signs?

While
KPTV-TV reported on the posted warning signs and the Riverside Fire’s devastation, the station didn’t speak to locals who might have reactions to the messages on the signs in Estacada and Colton.

But folks reacting on Twitter to Eskew’s photos of the signs had a few things to say. Some were flat-out against the signs:

  • “I say, let their damned houses burn,” one commenter said. “These guys won’t be missed. #LetTheMAGAtsDie. (I used to be a much kinder person before Trump…)”
  • “Those white trash losers don’t even own anything worth looting,” another commenter wrote.

It seemed, however, that quite a few more users were in support of the signs:

  • “I support this completely,” one commenter countered. “If these lawless criminals can bend the law and do what they want, so can everyone else.”
  • “Anybody who would loot peoples’ homes during a wildfire emergency is a pretty terrible human,” another commenter added. “As for them putting up signs warning those same trash humans away, guess they can’t say they weren’t warned.”
  • “ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT,” another commenter said. “Anyone caught should be dealt with appropriately. We all know the Dems would just say, ‘Poor non-gender [person] needs things, too. Be nice to it and talk to it; it will come around.’ Do what needs to be done to protect your homes.”
  • “It is a sad world we live in that one has to choose to stay within danger to protect property from looters,” another commenter noted. “There was a time when people helped each other, not [stole] from each other. Our society has bred people who think they are entitled to help themselves to whatever they want.”

Anything else?

Clackamas County deputies confirmed Saturday they have made two theft-related arrests in the fire zones, the station said, adding that one was in Mulino and another in the eastern portion of the county.

11 Facts That Prove That The Apocalyptic Wildfires On The West Coast Are Unlike Anything We Have Ever Seen Before

At this hour, a thick blanket of smoke from the horrific wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington is covering much of the western portion of the country.  U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon has used the word “apocalyptic” to describe the utter devastation that has been caused by these fires, and that is not an exaggeration whatsoever.  There are some small towns that have literally been wiped off the face of the map during the past week, and some of them may never be rebuilt.  This has already been a wildfire season like no other along the west coast, and we are just now entering the heart of the 2020 fire season.  It is very difficult to imagine another couple months of this, but that is potentially what we are facing.

By the time that it is over, nobody living on the west coast will ever forget the chaos that this wildfire season has caused.  Some of the largest fires have been burning for weeks, and all of the smoke is having a dramatic impact on large cities such as San Francisco

The cityscape resembles the surface of a distant planet, populated by a masked alien culture. The air, choked with blown ash, is difficult to breathe.

There is the Golden Gate Bridge, looming in the distance through a drift-smoke haze, and the Salesforce Tower, which against the blood-orange sky appears as a colossal spaceship in a doomsday film.

San Francisco, and much of California, has never been like this.

Yes, every year there are wildfires, but what we are watching this year is on an entirely different level.  The following are 11 facts that prove the apocalyptic wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington and unlike anything we have seen before…

#1 According to the National Interagency Fire Center, more than 30,000 firefighters are currently contending with 94 large fires that have burned more than 4.6 million acres in 12 western states.

#2 40 of those large fires have prompted evacuation orders, and many have been forced to flee “with just the clothes on their backs” because the fires have moved so rapidly.

#3 The August Complex Fire has already officially become the largest wildfire in the history of the state of California, and at this hour it continues to rage out of control.

#4 Five of the ten largest wildfires in California history have happened in 2020.

#5 In Oregon, 40,000 people have already been evacuated, and hundreds of thousands more have been told to prepare to potentially evacuate.

#6 On Saturday, the air quality index reading in Salem, Oregon was 512.  That measurement was “off the charts”, because the scale only goes up to 500.

#7 Prior to 2020, we had only witnessed a few “fire tornadoes” in all of U.S. history, but now they are occurring “every week or two”.

#8 According to the Washington Post, some wildfire plumes have risen “up to 10 miles high”, and that is definitely extremely unusual.

#9 About a week after a fire tornado hit the Huntington Lake area, some fires are still burning root systems underground “at more than 1,500 degrees”

A week later, Donnelly said Saturday that the Creek Fire continues to burn in the area, with some fires occurring underground and attacking the root system of trees at more than 1,500 degrees.

“Fire inspectors from the office of the State Fire Marshall stated that fire behavior in the Kennolyn area is the worst they had witnessed in their career,” Donnelly wrote in a post that was shared on social media, timestamped as 11 a.m. Saturday. “Unfortunately, it will be some time before it is safe to enter the burned areas.”

#10 Even though we still have quite a bit of time to go, this has already been the worst wildfire season in California’s history and the second worst wildfire season in Washington’s history.

#11 Sadly, the fire season still has another four months remaining, and there are at least seven weeks left in “prime fire season”.

Of course the list above simply cannot express the incredible amount of pain and suffering that these fires have caused for so many people.

When a reporter followed Betty Stevens of Phoenix, Oregon back to the spot where her home once stood, what they discovered was too horrible for words

Betty Stevens stumbled down the street that had until a few hours ago seemed so familiar, her feet crunching through ash and debris as she entered the smoking remains of her neighborhood. There were melted street signs. Trees burned down to stumps. Power lines across the road. And everywhere she turned, choking, acrid smoke.

Sobbing behind the face mask she normally wears for her job as a hospital respiratory therapist helping coronavirus patients, Stevens, 31, video recorded herself earlier this week as she stumbled through the neighborhood, raw emotion in her voice, sometimes unable to form words, moaning in obvious pain.

Could you imagine losing your home and everything inside of it?

Over the next several weeks, fires will continue to sweep across our western states and many more homes and buildings will likely be lost.

For many, it will be the final straw.  As I have discussed previously, large numbers of people have already moved away from the west coast, and there are others that are seriously considering doing so

Men accused of looting homes in Oregon’s wildfire evacuation zone take deputies on crazy chase through golf course

Deputies have arrested two men who they believe were looting homes in Oregon that had been evacuated due to the deadly wildfires on the West Coast.

The Beachie Creek Fire, which is smoldering in Clackamas and Marion Counties south of Portland, has burned 186,856 acres. In Marion County, officials have ordered 13,764 structures to be evacuated because they are at a Level 3 evacuation, which means “evacuate now” because there is current or imminent danger for the area.

With so many homes having been evacuated because of the massive fires, two Oregon men apparently tried to capitalize on the devastating natural disaster. Anthony Travis Bodda, 21, and Alexander Justin Jones, 36, were accused by police of looting evacuated homes in Marion County and taking deputies on a wild high-speed chase.

On Thursday, firefighting crews alerted police to a suspicious van in the towns of Detroit and Idahna, and were concerned that the vehicle could be involved with recent looting in the area.

Deputies responded just after 10 a.m. on Thursday, and the van drove off “at a high rate of speed.” Deputies from Marion and Linn Counties, as well as Oregon State Police, pursued the van in the Beachie Creek wildfire evacuation zone. The men attempted to ditch police by driving through a golf course.

Police used spike strips to disable the vehicle, then the men jumped out of the van and ran through the golf course. A police dog chased down the suspects. One was attempting to break into a home to escape the cops when he was apprehended. The other man was also tracked down by a K9 unit as he was entering a goat shed, according to police.

Bodda and Jones were both booked at the Marion County Jail and charged with attempted theft in the first degree, burglary in the second degree, felony elude, misdemeanor elude, reckless driving, interfering with a peace officer, possession of a burglary tool, reckless endangering, criminal mischief in the first degree, and criminal trespass in the second degree.

Sheriff officials said several stolen items were found inside the van. Bodda and Jones are also responsible for $1,500 in damage to the golf course, according to Fox News.

“I am disappointed that while in a state of emergency these people would victimize members of our community,” Marion County Sheriff Joe Kast said. “The women and men of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are committed to holding people accountable if they chose to victimize residents from our evacuated areas.”

He added that his officers would continue to patrol the evacuated areas to prevent any looting.

People in Oregon have said that their homes were looted during the deadly wildfires.

“Everything had been rifled through,” said Christy Beaver from Junction City. “Drawers were open. Stuff was all over. Credit cards and checkbooks were missing. We’re not sure what else is missing because we haven’t been able to go back up there.”

Blue River resident Marcie Costa said that she lost her home in the Holiday Farm Fire. Her neighbor’s home survived the fire, but possession worth more than $1,000 were stolen, including a generator.

“We’ve suffered enough these people have suffered enough,” Costa said. “We don’t need to be victimized anymore from someone who don’t give a stuff about us.”

“We understand that OSP and the Sheriff’s Department are doing the best that they can,” Costa said. “But they’re spread so thin.”

Rumors of widespread looting caused 300 people to attempt to return to their homes inside the fiery evacuation zone. The concerned residents left the Super 8 hotel in Redmond on Thursday to inspect their properties for fire damage and looting.

“All across the region, we are asking folks to please respect those closures,” said Kassidy Kern, a spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service. “Not just for the security of your personal property, but also for firefighters working in the area.”

Death toll from West Coast wildfires reaches 7

At least seven people have lost their lives in the devastating wildfires that continue to rage in several Western U.S. states, with reports of victims coming from California, Oregon and Washington.

What are the details?

The first reported death was out of Washington on Wednesday, where a 1-year-old boy died and his parents were severely burned as the family fled wildfires in the northern part of the state. The mother and father were hospitalized for their injuries.

Three people have been killed by the fires in Oregon. The Oregonian reported that a 13-year-old boy, Wyatt Tofte, and his grandmother, Peggy Mosso, were the first fatalities in the state. CBS News reported that Wyatt fled as a fire approached his home on Tuesday night, and his body was later found inside a vehicle along with the remains of his dog. The boy’s mother was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The third victim in Oregon was found on Thursday in the southern part of the state from a fire that is now being investigated as arson. That person’s identity has not been made public.

Another three people were found dead in Butte County, California, according to Mercury News. One of them was discovered late Wednesday morning, and authorities believe the individual was overcome by flames after fleeing their vehicle. Another two victims were found together in a separate area, but they have not been identified positively according to Sheriff Kory Honea.

“Time and again we have seen how dangerous wildfires can be,” Honea said during a press conference. “So I ask that you please, please, please be prepared, maintain situational awareness and heed the warnings.”

The The New York Times noted that “California’s wildfire season is already the most severe in modern history, measured by acres burned.” The outlet reported, “More than 2.5 million acres of land have burned in the state this year, nearly 20 times what had burned at this time last year.”

The Associate Press reported that since mid-August in California, “fires have killed 12 people, destroyed more than 3,600 buildings, burned old growth redwoods, charred chaparral and forced evacuations in communities near the coast, in wine country north of San Francisco and along the Sierra Nevada.”

Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate their homes in recent days to escape the West Coast fires that have been called “unprecedented” as high winds fan the flames amid drought conditions.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) expressed some cautious optimism on Thursday, saying a “We’re encouraged that the wind activity appears to be dying down. The rest of the week looks a little more favorable.”

Thousands of Oregonians flee as windblown fires consume hundreds of homes

Thousands of Oregonians have been forced to evacuate their homes as high winds hastened the spread of raging wildfires in several Western U.S. states on Wednesday, and hundreds of residences have been lost in the flames.

What are the details?

The Washington Post reported that “tens of thousands” of Oregon residents have fled their homes in recent days, some through personal necessity and others triggered by government orders to leave immediately as blazes ravaged not only vast forestland but residential areas where hundreds of homes have already been consumed.

Jackson County, Ore. resident Beth Zerkel and her family had to abandon their home. Zerkel told The Post, “I don’t have anything with me. I wasn’t able to pack. Now I understand when people say they left with just the shirt off their back.”

She added, “There are people going into parking lots and sleeping in their cars with their cats and dogs because there’s no place to go.”

The Associated Press reported “fires trapped firefighters and civilians behind fire lines in Oregon and leveled an entire small town in eastern Washington” on Wednesday.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) warned, “This could be the greatest loss of human life and property due to wildfire in our state’s history,” noting that no fatalities from the fires had yet been confirmed.

In neighboring Washington, a 1-year-old boy was killed in a wildfire in the northern part of the state, The New York Times reported.

Early Wednesday, officials counted more than 85 wildfires burning in California, Oregon, and Washington. The New York Post reported in the afternoon that ” 96 large fires are burning in 12 states and scorched more than 3.4 million acres (5,300 square miles — about the size of Connecticut).”

Two million acres have been consumed in California alone, according to UPI. The outlet reported that “record heatwave temperatures fueled numerous wildfires over the Labor Day weekend.” The fires in recent days have pushed California to 2.3 million acres burned in 2020, which is a new record for the state.

Anything else?

The fires caused the sky to turn hues of red and orange in several parts of West Coast states, leading people to share photos and videos on social media showing the eerie scenes.

One person posted a photo of red skies on Reddit, writing, “Oregon wildfires making it look straight apocalyptic.”

CBS News reported that “according to NASA, the color-changing skies are a result of smoke particles, which block certain wavelength colors from the sun.”

Are Directed Energy Weapons Starting Fires In California and Oregon!?

A Directed Energy Weapon was caught on a live stream going right into a fire in California. Then there was another shown igniting a fire in Oregon. Now, there’s a black censorship line through the beam.  What is going on?!

YouTuber Dutchsinse has discovered something unbelievable while looking at the fires in the Western United States and studying the earthquakes occurring around the world. When it’s first noticed, Dutchsinse called it “some kind of ray or beam of some kind.”

If you have trouble seeing, it at first, adjust the brightness on your device. But it is an incredible find.

The video below is a shorter version and has been brightened so the DEW can be seen better.

After this, Dutchsinse discovered another DEW last night.  That’s at least two nights in a row. This one appears to come from the ocean and into a fire that has just started in Oregon.

After this was discovered, Dutchsinse noticed that someone decided to “censor” the beam by literally putting a black censorship bar right over the heat signature.

The energy beam which was beaming down has been BLACKED OUT ON PURPOSE— LOOK CLOSE wth????? To try to hide it… they tried to match the black of the background but.. because its a live feed grey black its impossible to perfectly match.. so now we have a black line hiding the original beam HAHAHAHAHAAH ? Republican statement won’t appear in Oregon voter pamphlet because it arrived 29 seconds late

A statement from the Oregon Republican Party won’t appear in the state voters’ guide mailed out for November’s election because it arrived 29 seconds late to the online reporting system, officials told the Associated Press.

What are the details?

The statement was headlined “Had enough? Vote Republican!” and attacked Democratic leadership in Oregon over issues ranging from “Unrestrained rioting” in Portland to coronavirus mismanagement resulting in “catastrophic small business losses,” the AP said.

Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that Kevin Hoar, communications director for the state GOP, said his party did get the statement into an online filing system by 4:59 p.m. Aug. 25, the final day for filing, the outlet said.

Hoar also said state Republican chairman Bill Currier was locked out of the online filing system for several hours, which delayed the GOP’s ability to file its statement, the AP said.

But Laura Fosmire, a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Bev Clarno, said deadlines apply equally to everyone, the outlet noted.

“Anyone wishing to submit information to the Voters’ Pamphlet has several weeks to do so, and we recommend avoiding waiting until the last minute for this reason,” she said in a statement, according to the AP.

But Currier told the outlet that not including the GOP’s statement in the voting guide “reeks of partisan discrimination.”

“If a bureaucrat in some decision-making role simply didn’t like what our statement said, this doesn’t give them the right to silence us,” he added to the AP.

However, Fosmire told the outlet there were “no problems or glitches” with the online reporting system: “[W]e simply received the statement after the filing deadline.”

Hoar added to the AP that a lawsuit was filed demanding the statement’s inclusion before the voters’ guide goes to print later this month.

“We can’t quite explain the interpretation and decision here” by state elections officials, Hoar told the outlet.

The Democratic Party of Oregon and six other political parties are included in the voters’ pamphlet for the Nov. 3 election, the AP said.

Oregon secretary of state is a Republican

As it turns out, Oregon Secretary of State Clarno is the only Republican in statewide office, the outlet said. Clarno, a former Oregon House speaker, was appointed by Democratic Gov. Kate Brown to serve the rest of the Dennis Richardson’s term after he died in 2019, the AP said.

How did Democrats react?

“That the GOP wasn’t able to follow the rules and is now crying foul is ridiculous,” the Oregon Democratic Party said in response to the Republican reaction, according to a news video from KGW-TV. “And their accusations of partisanship are laughable. … The Oregon GOP messed up. Instead of accepting the consequences that come with procrastinating until the absolute last minute, they’re throwing a fit.”

The Democrats also noted that “for a political party that touts ‘personal responsibility’ and following the the letter of the law, the Republicans are having an awfully hard time owning up to their own mistake,” the station added.

The curious case of Kanye West

In a similar matter, headline-grabbing hip-hop artist Kanye West won’t be on the ballot for November’s presidential election in Wisconsin after his election lawyer submitted signatures just a couple of minutes too late last month.

West’s legal team tried to argue that the signatures were turned in before 5:01 p.m., which means they technically met the 5 p.m. deadline — but the elections commission rejected that argument in a 5-1 vote. Milwaukee Republican Robert Spindell was the only commissioner to argue that West should still be on the ballot.

“Mr. West is an African American candidate,” Spindell said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “And I think we should do all we can to — after the terrible treatment that the black population in Milwaukee received during the April election — that we give them a choice.” Spindell accused Democrats of attempting to suppress the black vote.

West is generally considered a candidate who could take votes — especially black votes — away from Democratic nominee Joe Biden. But polling indicates that even if he did get on ballots, his presence wouldn’t make much of a dent.

Seattle To Be Hit By A Giant Tsunami 2 Hours And 20 Minutes After “The Big One” Strikes The Cascadia Subduction Zone

A giant tsunami along the west coast has been very heavy on my heart for the last 24 hours, and then when I saw a new Fox News article about a simulation that was just run by officials in Washington state I knew that I had to write an article.  Experts at the Washington Department of Natural Resources decided to simulate what would happen if a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and what they discovered is really, really bad.

Such a seismic event would produce an absolutely massive tsunami, and the Fox News article says that waves “could reach Seattle in 2 hours and 20 minutes after an earthquake”.  And this is not just a hypothetical scenario that may or may not happen.  Scientists have repeatedly warned us that it is just a matter of time before such a disaster takes place, Steve Quayle has been relentlessly warning about this as well, and I have been encouraging people to move away from the region for years.

If you think that you will just be able to hop into your vehicle and escape the oncoming tsunami, you are just being delusional.  The highways will instantly become crammed with countless others that have the exact same idea, and they will become deathtraps.

Of course, if the quake happens in the middle of the night, most people will never have any idea that the tsunami is coming.  From the moment the earthquake happens, it will be just “15 to 20 minutes” before the initial wave starts hitting the outer coast…

The simulations show there are some locations around the state where residents would have very little — if any — time to escape the onslaught of floodwaters because of the speed of the wave.

In the videos, the initial wave could hit the state’s outer coast in 15 to 20 minutes after the ground starts shaking and the quake generates a tsunami.

Oregon State University paleoseismologist Chris Goldfinger believes that the Cascadia Subduction Zone could potentially produce an earthquake that is “almost 30 times more energetic” than anything that the San Andreas Fault could produce.  In a worst-case scenario, Goldfinger says that a quake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone could create a colossal wall of water up to 100 feet high that would smash everything in front of it

The tsunami would bring water 20 to 80 – maybe even 100 – feet higher than today’s high tides. Most of the structures that have survived the killer quake but built too low will be smashed into by a devastating wall of water. And the next surge could be even higher, and the one after that higher still.

It won’t just be the water causing destruction, but everything it picks up. Goldfinger described what would happen all around and on the spit of land where CBN News interviewed him in the middle of Newport, Oregon’s Yaquina Bay, a few hundred yards from the Pacific.

“Then suddenly you’ve got a bay full of fishing boats, refrigerators, cars and everything else,” Goldfinger explained. “And it’s like a glacier of debris that’s just kind of sloshing back and forth.”

We all remember watching the tsunami that the Fukushima earthquake in Japan caused.

Well, an event of this nature would be far, far more destructive.  The following is what Steve Quayle once had to say about the amount of damage that we could potentially witness…

“The amount of damage, and I am going to choose my words carefully, is going to be precedent setting. It’s going to be the combination of volcanos going off that are inland from the subduction zone where the plates meet, coupled with tsunamis. . . . When this happens, you will lose eight million to twenty million people. When it happens, you will lose all productivity in the electronic field, obviously Silicon Valley, and all food production in all of California, Oregon and Washington. When it happens, you will have a State of Emergency unlike any other. How about the refugees? There will be 3.5 million refugees to take care of. When this happens, what happens to the underground aquifers, and where does everybody go for fresh water? There will be years of drought, years of famine and years of water, water where did it all go? It is a very dire situation painted by computer models. This is not a sensational thing. It is a reality based, scientific study with the application of what happens.”

Others have issued similar warnings.  In a previous article, I shared what the head of FEMA’s Region X once told the New Yorker

If the entire zone gives way at once, an event that seismologists call a full-margin rupture, the magnitude will be somewhere between 8.7 and 9.2. That’s the very big one.

…By the time the shaking has ceased and the tsunami has receded, the region will be unrecognizable. Kenneth Murphy, who directs FEMA’s Region X, the division responsible for Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, says, “Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast.”

In the Pacific Northwest, everything west of Interstate 5 covers some hundred and forty thousand square miles, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Eugene, Salem (the capital city of Oregon), Olympia (the capital of Washington), and some seven million people.

If you live in that area of the country or you know people that do, please read those paragraphs again.

“Everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast” is a quote that I will never forget.

I have tried to do my best to warn people that this is an event that is going to happen someday, and in my new book I share warnings from many others about a giant tsunami that will strike the west coast.

Of course, most people that live on the west coast are not interested in such warnings, and one day time will suddenly run out.

But nobody will be able to say that they weren’t warned.  Experts have been assuring us that such a disaster is in our future for many years, and this new Fox News article is just the latest example.

A giant tsunami along the west coast has been very heavy on my heart for the last 24 hours, and then when I saw a new Fox News article about a simulation that was just run by officials in Washington state I knew that I had to write an article.  Experts at the Washington Department of Natural Resources decided to simulate what would happen if a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and what they discovered is really, really bad.

Such a seismic event would produce an absolutely massive tsunami, and the Fox News article says that waves “could reach Seattle in 2 hours and 20 minutes after an earthquake”.  And this is not just a hypothetical scenario that may or may not happen.  Scientists have repeatedly warned us that it is just a matter of time before such a disaster takes place, Steve Quayle has been relentlessly warning about this as well, and I have been encouraging people to move away from the region for years.

If you think that you will just be able to hop into your vehicle and escape the oncoming tsunami, you are just being delusional.  The highways will instantly become crammed with countless others that have the exact same idea, and they will become deathtraps.

“Demand Is Insane”: NYC Movers Turn People Away, Suburban & Rural Housing Snagged Up, As Big City COVID-Exodus Accelerates

The pandemic-induced summer of escape from New York continues at a moment violent crime is on the rise, restaurant and public venue closures make the city less appealing, public transit is reeling in debt, and remote working set-ups are giving those with means greater mobility.

More worrisome trends… or rather signs of the times signaling that for many the gentrified Big Apple has as one family recently put it reached its “expiration date”. Two separate NY Times reports on Sunday detailed that moving companies are so busy they’re in an unprecedented situation of having to turn people away, while simultaneously the suburbs are witnessing an explosion in demand “unlike any in recent memory”.

And then there’s fresh data showing that during the pandemic Americans are fast getting the hell out of the more expensive “real estate meccas” of New York and New Jersey.

First, New York City moving are reporting a rush of customers so high it feels like “move out day on a college campus”:

According to FlatRate Moving, the number of moves it has done has increased more than 46 percent between March 15 and August 15, compared with the same period last year. The number of those moving outside of New York City is up 50 percent — including a nearly 232 percent increase to Dutchess County and 116 percent increase to Ulster County in the Hudson Valley.

“The first day we could move, we left,” a dentist was cited as saying of the moment movers were declared an “essential service” by Gov. Cuomo late March. Her family moved to Pennsylvania where they had relatives.

And second, the Times details the unprecedented boom in the suburban real estate as an increasingly online workforce is fed up with closures in the city, losing its appeal and vibrancy.

July alone witnessed a whopping 44% increase in home sales among suburban counties near NYC compared to the same month last year, as the report details:

Over three days in late July, a three-bedroom house in East Orange, N.J., was listed for sale for $285,000, had 97 showings, received 24 offers and went under contract for 21 percent over that price.

On Long Island, six people made offers on a $499,000 house in Valley Stream without seeing it in person after it was shown on a Facebook Live video. In the Hudson Valley, a nearly three-acre property with a pool listed for $985,000 received four all-cash bids within a day of having 14 showings.

Since the pandemic began, the suburbs around New York City, from New Jersey to Westchester County to Connecticut to Long Island, have been experiencing enormous demand for homes of all prices, a surge that is unlike any in recent memory, according to officials, real estate agents and residents.

They’re not just fleeing for the suburbs or upstate, but also to the significantly cheaper and lower cost of living areas of the country like Texas, Florida, South Carolina, and Oregon, or to rural areas.

COVID-19 is fast reviving American mobility on scales reminiscent of the mid-20th century. Bloomberg describes separately that “Far more people moved to Vermont, Idaho, Oregon, and South Carolina than left during the pandemic, according to data provided to Bloomberg News by United Van Lines.”

“On the other hand, the reverse was true for New York and New Jersey, which saw residents moving to Florida, Texas and other Sunbelt states between March and July,” the report finds.

General fear of living in densely populated areas, better enterprise video communications platforms making possible fully remote workplaces which in some cases are ‘canceling’ the traditional office space altogether, and a lack of nightlife or entertainment allure of big cities is driving the exodus.

In addition to the aforementioned states, “Illinois, Connecticut and California, three other states with big urban populations, were also among those losing out during the pandemic,” according to United Van Lines data.

Oregon sheriffs unload on Dem Gov. Kate Brown for trying to use their deputies to quell Portland violence

Multiple Oregon sheriffs spoke out against Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Monday, slamming the Democrat for her lack of leadership in the crisis unfolding in Portland.

What’s the background?

Protests have been ongoing in the so-called City of Roses for nearly 100 straight nights with escalating levels of violence. The federal government has attempted to help quell the unrest, but Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) and Brown rebuffed their efforts.

Now, with the cold-blooded murder of a Trump supporter over the weekend, the violence is a problem local and state leaders can no longer ignore.

So on Sunday, Brown released her plan to address the violence: send more law enforcement resources — from Washington and Clackamas counties and the city of Gresham — to Portland.

What did the sheriffs say?

In no uncertain terms, the sheriffs slammed the plan and said they would not send their officers to Portland.

Clackamas Sheriff Craig Roberts advised Brown that more resources will not solve the problem in Portland — only policy change can provide the desperately needed solution.

According to Roberts, Brown never contacted him about sending his deputies to Portland.

“I was surprised to read that the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office was part of the plan since the Governor’s Office never contacted me,” Roberts explained. “Had Governor Brown discussed her plan with my office, I would have told her it’s about changing policy not adding resources. Increasing law enforcement resources in Portland will not solve the nightly violence and now, murder. The only way to make Portland safe again, is to support a policy that holds offenders accountable for their destruction and violence.”

He went on to say:

That will require the DA to charge offenders appropriately and a decision by the Multnomah County Presiding Judge not to allow offenders released on their own recognizance, and instead require bail with conditions. The same offenders are arrested night after night, only to be released by the court and not charged with a crime by the DA’s Office. The next night they are back at it, endangering the lives of law enforcement and the community all over again.For all of us in law enforcement, keeping our community safe is our first priority. Had Governor Brown asked me, I would have told her that no amount of human resources will stop the “cycle of violence” (her term) that is making Portland unsafe. For that to occur, the criminal justice system will need do its part and hold offenders accountable.

Meanwhile, Washington County Sheriff Pat Garrett said the anti-police message supported by progressive politicians is why his officers will remain in his jurisdiction.

“At this time, I do not plan to send deputies to work directly in Portland,” he said. “[T]he lack of political support for public safety, the uncertain legal landscape, the current volatility combined with intense scrutiny on use of force presents an unacceptable risk if deputies were deployed directly.”

How did Brown respond?

According to KATU-TV, the governor’s office said, in part, “The Governor’s plan is meant to allow for this kind of flexibility in supporting each other as we all collectively deal with the difficult situation in Portland. It is up to each county to determine the personnel and resources they have available to volunteer for this effort.”

Oregon Dem lawmaker ‘chains’ himself to a mailbox in order to ‘defend’ it from Trump administration

A Democratic U.S. congressman from Oregon has posted a video online of himself “chained” to a mailbox in an apparent display of defiance against the Trump administration’s proposed changes to the United States Postal Service.

What are the details?

Rep. Peter DeFazio has been on a social media tirade in recent days, claiming that President Donald Trump “is intentionally trying to destroy the United States Postal Service (USPS) to steal the election,” and insisting to his followers that “we can’t let it stand!”

On Tuesday, the Oregon Democrat posted a video to his Twitter feed showing a sparkling-new chain loosely draped over his shoulder and wrapped around a public mail box, while he declares, “They’re not gettin’ this one!”

The message accompanying the post read, “They’re trying to tear apart our Postal Service piece by piece. But Peter DeFazio is defending our right to vote (and every mailbox in America).”

The fact that DeFazio is clearly not chained to the mailbox indicates his video is part of a political stunt, but it also serves as evidence of the hysteria going on by some Democrats about proposed changes to the postal service.

The USPS has acknowledged it is experiencing a “staggering loss of mail volume” since COVID-19 hit. In the meantime, President Trump has condemned the widespread utilization of mail-in voting for the November general election, while his administration has proposed cost-saving measures for the postal service.

Anything else?

Some prominent Democrats have painted the changes as an attempt by the president to suppress voting, with former Democratic Vice President Al Gore even saying that “by tampering with the postal service, [Trump] is in effect putting his knee on the neck of American democracy and trying to make it impossible for people to vote by mail.”

The comment was interpreted by many to be a reference to the death of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck in late May.

Before Gore’s remarks, Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis suggested there was a “conspiracy” to steal the election when she saw a mail truck on the bed of a red tow truck and the driver purportedly had on “a red cap with white letters.”

But Trump-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy attempted to put minds at ease hours before Rep. DeFazio’s display was posted on Tuesday, announcing in a statement that the planned operational changes will be put on hold:

I came to the Postal Service to make changes to secure the success of this organization and its long-term sustainability. I believe significant reforms are essential to that objective, and work toward those reforms will commence after the election. In the meantime, there are some longstanding operational initiatives — efforts that predate my arrival at the Postal Service — that have been raised as areas of concern as the nation prepares to hold an election in the midst of a devastating pandemic. To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded.

DeJoy is scheduled to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Friday and the Democrat-led House Oversight Committee on Monday.

‘Kindergarten Cop’ scrapped from theater lineup following claim that it ‘romanticizes over-policing’

An Oregon film organization has removed 90s action-comedy “Kindergarten Cop” from its schedule, following complaints over the movie’s content including that it “romanticizes over-policing.”

What are the details?

The NW Film Center in Portland announced plans to play the PG-13 rated flick this week at its drive-in theater in honor of the film’s 30th anniversary and “for its importance in Oregon filmmaking history,” according to a press release obtained by Willamette Week.

The movie was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger who plays a police officer who goes undercover as a substitute kindergarten teacher in order to nab a drug dealer. In the film, Schwarzenegger’s character, John Kimble, wins over his class and skeptical administrators after a rocky start, using his police experience and positive reinforcement.

But local author Lois Leveen said the movie sends a bad message, and rallied others online to successfully have it scrapped.

Leveen’s Twitter account is now hidden, but the Daily Mail showed clips of her tweets criticizing the center’s selection of “Kindergarten Cop.” Leveen wrote, “What’s so funny about School-to-Prison pipeline? Kindergarten Cop-Out: Tell @nwfilmcenter there’s nothing fun in cops traumatizing kids. National reckoning on overpolicing is a weird time to revive Kindergarten Cop. IRL, we are trying to end school-to-prison pipeline.”

She added, “Yes, KINDERGARTEN COP is only a movie. So are BIRTH OF A NATION and GONE WITH THE WIND, but we recognize films like those are not ‘good family fun.’ They are relics of how pop culture feeds racist assumptions. KINDERGARTEN COP romanticizes over-policing in the U.S.”

Critics who agreed with Leveen piled on, leading the NW Film Center to eventually cave, replacing “Kindergarten Cop” with a documentary about the late Rep. John Lewis (D), a leader in the civil rights movement who recently passed away.

News of NWFC bending to the mob was also met with criticism. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) reacted to the cancellation by tweeting, “Nutty. Angry leftists hate Hollywood. Anyone who disagrees will be censored. Hollywood, afraid of the mob, will keep funding those trying to erase any speech/movies that don’t conform.”

A NWFC spokesperson told Willamette Week that it wasn’t just Leveen’s online criticism that caused them to change their minds on running “Kindergarten Cop,” but “a dozen others, including Black community members who asked us to considered opening the Drive-In with a different movie.”

Leveen was not happy with that response either, telling the outlet, “I have been a Silver Screen member for years, and an NWFC patron even longer, and I know how seldom their screenings attract substantial number of BIPOC [black, indigenous and people of color] audience members. When a white-dominant institution cannot honestly admit their error and insensitivity, it does not suggest they will avoid similar errors and insensitivities in the future.”

Crooks apparently still not getting the message: Homeowners shoot three in pair of suspected burglaries

A pair of homeowners separated by nearly the entire width of the United States but bound by their embrace of the Constitution — specifically the Second Amendment — recently fended off suspected burglars in separate incidents.

In short, neither homeowner shied away from pulling the triggers of their guns.

What are the details?

New York State Police said two men are recovering in jail after an Enfield homeowner shot them during a reported home invasion late last month,
WBNF-AM reported.

The resident told troopers that the two men broke into his home on Rumsey Hill Road just before 7:30 a.m. July 25, and the homeowner shot them after they refused to leave the property, the station said.

Investigators said they found 50-year-old Mark Ward of Covert, WBNF reported, adding that 38-year-old Jaimie Coleman drove 32-year-old Frisco Meeks of Ithaca to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.

Ward and Meeks were both treated for gunshot wounds, the station said, and were charged with felony burglary when they were released from the hospital. WBNF said Coleman of Trumansburg was arrested the same day and charged with felony burglary.

Ward and Meeks were sent to the Tompkins County Jail without bail while Coleman had bail set at $15,000, the station said, adding that the homeowner was not injured in the incident.

An Oregon homeowner shot a woman who was involved in a burglary at his northeast Portland home early Monday, police
told the Oregonian.

Portland police said the man shot the woman at the residence south of Interstate 84, the paper said, adding that the woman was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. The incident took place just before 7 a.m. in the 1300 block of Northeast 81st Avenue, according to
KOIN-TV.

Police added that the homeowner, who they described as “elderly,” is cooperating with investigators, the Oregonian said.

Neither the man nor the woman has been publicly identified, the paper added, noting that detectives were gathering more information about the incident later on Monday morning.

Fed-up motorist and black-clad militant pull guns on each other as leftists riot in a smaller Oregon city over weekend

Indeed leftists are showing their solidarity with Portland militants by staging riots of their own in various U.S. cities — and things heated up over the weekend in a smaller Oregon city as well.

What are the details?

Hundreds showed up in Eugene on Saturday night — less than two hours from Portland and with only 177,000 residents — and set off fireworks at a county jail and federal courthouse while attacking businesses with employees trapped inside, Fox News reported.

In the end seven adults and one juvenile were arrested, the network said, after which an anti-capitalist, anti-fascist group of teens that became known amid the Portland rioting appeared to raise money for the jailbirds. The Pacific Northwest Youth Liberation Front’s unverified account retweeted messages directing people to use mobile payment service Venmo to send bail funds, Fox News added.

In Eugene, crowds blocked the streets and prevented one man in a pickup truck from passing, according to conservative journalist Andy Ngo, who made headlines last summer after an attack by members of the far-left militant group Antifa sent him to the hospital.

After the crowd surrounded his vehicle Saturday night, the driver opened his door and pointed his handgun toward another man wearing a black T-shirt and helmet. The demonstrator pointed his own weapon at the driver through the opened car door window as the two faced off amid shouting from the crowd. The now-viral video of the exchange has garnered more than 1.6 million views as of Monday.

The pair jaw with each other in the clip, and the driver appears to say “get the f*** out” while the militant quickly replies “no.” Fox News said it wasn’t clear if either man in the video was among the arrestees.

Armed counter-protesters show up

The network also said armed counter-protesters showed up in Eugene, and a man was arrested after firing a handgun into the air while among crowd of about 300 people.

Police said the counter-protest dispersed before 10 p.m., and 200 remaining demonstrators began launching fireworks toward the federal courthouse and blocking traffic, Fox News said, adding that the group then marched to the Lane County Jail where they threw fireworks into the employee parking area and set off smoke bombs at the building’s entrance.

The “now-riotous group” advanced downtown and began ripping down street signs, spray painting buildings and a police auditor car, and smashed the windows of a Wells Fargo and Whole Foods. They also launched fireworks at the local Elkhorn Brewing and broke several windows while staff was inside.

Officers were pelted with large rocks and police made announcements that the assembly was unlawful. Police deployed pepper ball munitions and CS gas to disperse crowds. A total of seven adults and one juvenile were arrested as a result of the riot.

Unlike in Portland, there is no federal law enforcement deployment in Eugene where local police appear to be keeping their distance and using drones to monitor crowds before stepping in to stop violence, Fox News added.

Portland protesters issue their ‘list’ of demands amid teargassing, riots

Portland, Oregon, rioters listed their demands Wednesday amid the protests gripping the city.

What are the details?

The group of rioters projected a list of their demands onto a nearby building as Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler talked to the crowd about the continually deteriorating conditions of the city.

A reporter for KPTV-TV shared the demands on Twitter, writing, “Directly behind Mayor Wheeler, a list of protesters’ demands projected on the Justice Center.”

The demands included defunding the Portland Police Bureau by a minimum of 50%, with the money being reallocated to “reinvest into the communities, especially the black community.”

The rioters also demanded authorities free all protesters from jail, and remove the presence of all federal law enforcement officers from the Portland area.

Demonstrators also demanded Wheeler resign as mayor.

‘It is an unconstitutional occupation’

A portion of Wheeler’s Wednesday speech addressing protesters could be heard in a video clip, according to KGW-TV.

“I think what we’re doing tonight is actually the best thing we can do right now,” he said. “Be here, be heard, be unified, and be clear. We didn’t want [federal police], we didn’t ask for them, they’re not trained for what they’re being asked to do. And we want them to leave.”

He added, “It is an unconstitutional occupation. The tactics that have been used by our federal officers are abhorrent. They did not act with probable cause, people are not being told who they are being arrested by, and you’re being denied basic constitutional rights.”

Protesters gathered Wednesday night and teargassed the mayor, screaming “F*** Ted Wheeler” and more.

Federal officers also ended up gassing Wheeler and other protesters during the evening appearance.

“I’m not afraid, but I am pissed off,” Wheeler told the New York Times about the gassing. “This is an egregious overreaction on the part of the federal officers.”

“This is not a de-escalation strategy. This is flat-out urban warfare,” Wheeler added. “And it’s being wrought on the people of this country by the president of the United States and it’s got to stop.”

Hate hoax once again: Former county political candidate admits writing racist letter he claimed was left in his mailbox

A former commissioner candidate for Umatilla County, Oregon, admitted to police that he wrote a racist letter to himself that he had claimed was left in his mailbox, the
East Oregonian reported.

What are the details?

The outlet said Jonathan Lopez previously posted a photo of the typed letter to Facebook, stating he’d received the letter but held “no resentment for whomever wrote this.”

The letter — which he said he found June 23 — begins with “Mr. Lopez” and follows with racist statements such as, “Don’t waste your time trying to become anything in this county we will make sure you never win and your family suffers along with all the other f****** Mexicans in the area!” KEPR-TV reported.

The East Oregonian said the letter also contained homophobic and misogynist slurs. There were also subtle threats, such as “Umatilla County kills [redacted] like you and are dumped in the fields and river. That’s why our crops are the best!” The letter was signed, “Sincerely, America!”

Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston on Monday told the outlet that Lopez confessed verbally and in writing to writing the letter. Edmiston added to the East Oregonian that the case would be forwarded to the Umatilla County district attorney’s office for initiating a false report — a Class A misdemeanor in Oregon.

Edmiston told KEPR police had been conducting a criminal investigation for intimidation in the second degree until Lopez admitted to fabricating the letter.

“This investigation is particularly frustrating as we are in the midst of multiple major investigations while battling a resource shortage due to the current pandemic,” the chief told the East Oregonian. “The time spent on this fictitious claim means time lost on other matters, not to mention it needlessly adds to the incredible tension that exists in our nation today. As a lifelong resident of this diverse community, I’m disgusted someone would try to carelessly advance their personal ambitions at the risk of others.”

Edmiston said his department was also forwarding information to the district attorney’s office about possibly fraudulent statements in Lopez’s entry in the May 2020 voter’s guide about his background and education. Those claims were also reported in the East Oregonian leading up to the election.

Edmiston also alleged that HPD has learned that Lopez never served in the U.S. Coast Guard as stated, which would be a violation of the 2013 Stolen Valor Act. Lopez has not provided documentation to the East Oregonian to confirm his claim of Coast Guard service when asked.

Lopez ran for a seat on the Umatilla County Board of Commissioners during the May 2020 primary and placed fourth, the East Oregonian said, adding that he’s also a member of the city of Hermiston’s Hispanic Advisory Committee.

Lopez has removed his public Facebook profile, KEPR reported. His website, lopez4umatillaco.com, also was down Wednesday.

‘F*** Kate Brown’: Video seems to show Oregon state trooper defying governor’s mask order in coffee shop. Trooper later placed on leave.

Oregon State Police placed a trooper on administrative leave and launched an internal investigation after video appears to show him defying Democratic Gov. Kate Brown’s statewide mask order in a Corvallis coffee shop next to Oregon State University, the
Oregonian reported.

What are the details?

The uniformed trooper was captured on surveillance video — which doesn’t have audio — entering Allan’s Coffee & Tea on Wednesday morning without a mask, and the shop’s assistant manager, Travis Boss, told the trooper he needed to wear a mask, the outlet said.

“Governor Brown has no authority to take our civil liberties. We aren’t going to wear masks,” the trooper allegedly said, according to a written statement from Boss that was provided to the Oregonian.

Boss added that the trooper placed his order and said, “F*** Kate Brown,” the paper reported, adding that the incident took place the same day Brown’s order went into effect.

“He’s a state trooper, he’s in uniform,” Boss said, according to the Oregonian, adding that the trooper is a regular with whom he has a good rapport. “He’s more or less saying, ‘This is how it’s going to be, and this is what I want.'”

Soon three more troopers entered the coffee shop without masks and refused to wear them, after which they placed their orders and sat at a table with the first trooper, the paper said, adding that video shows the group remaining for about 10 minutes.

Boss added to the paper that he felt compelled to fill their orders since they were in uniform — despite having sent other patrons away earlier for not wearing masks.

Boss said two of the troopers are regulars and he expected them to leave after getting their drinks, which they usually do. Boss said he contacted the owners to determine what he should do next.

Boss said he was instructed to tell them that Corvallis police had been contacted and they should leave. The video shows Boss approaching them at their table, and the troopers stand up to go.

One of the troopers allegedly said, “That’s Corvallis for you,” as they walked out, Boss recalled.

What happened next?

Allan’s Coffee & Tea reported the incident to local police, the paper said, adding that Oregon State Police launched an internal investigation.

“The involved trooper has been placed on administrative leave,” OSP spokesman Capt. Timothy Fox told the Oregonian in a statement. “OSP is early in the investigation, but if found to be true, we are thoroughly disappointed and expect our troopers to follow the governor’s executive orders and be examples in the community.”

Fox added to the paper Thursday that all four uniformed officers on the video are state troopers assigned to Oregon State University, but he wouldn’t name the trooper on leave.

“Let me be clear, Oregon State Police Troopers are not above the law and this conduct is being immediately addressed,” Oregon State Police Superintendent Travis Hampton noted, according to the Oregonian. “As the leader of the Oregon State Police, I would like to offer my apology to the coffee shop employees and the community.”

What did the governor have to say?

“It is inexcusable that a few Oregon State Troopers disregarded my face covering requirement yesterday, and ignored a request from a fellow Oregonian to follow the rule,” Brown said Thursday, according to the paper. “Oregon State Police Superintendent Hampton and I agree that their actions and behaviors were absolutely unacceptable.”

Anything else?

The co-owners of coffee shop, Robert and Kathryn Morgan, told the paper they respect the work of troopers and didn’t want the incident to turn political. But Kathryn Moran added to the Oregonian that it was “pretty upsetting” that the troopers wouldn’t wear masks and put their business in an awkward position of being at risk for not following the rules.

“It’s sad,” she told the paper. “These are people in a position of power and leaders in the community. I think we look to them as examples. For them not to be following the orders, whether or not they agree with it, is telling.”

A lieutenant from the Oregon State Police arrived at the coffee shop later in the morning to talk with Boss, and Robert Morgan participated via speaker phone. Boss said he explained what happened and what the trooper said, including the alleged use of profanity.

“I don’t hold any grudges against him,” Boss said. “I feel bad about the possible backlash that might come from this, on them, and at the same time I know that’s not my doing.”

Robert Morgan said the lieutenant didn’t apologize for the incident but assured them it would not be swept under the rug.

All the same, Robert Morgan said the lieutenant told them they could share the information with whomever they wanted but “but they would prefer to keep it as an internal matter.”

Robert and Kathryn Morgan told the paper they wrestled with whether or not to take the incident public but chose to do so in order to help businesses stay open and ensure everyone follows the mask order.

Racism is Dead! Racist Elk Statue Burns In Portland, Oregon

According to the recent media headlines, the way to end racism is to destroy statues. Well, an iconic elk statue has been burned in Portland, Oregon, so does that mean racism is now dead?

Portland protestors were rightly mocked after setting fire to an elk statue. On Wednesday night, protestors lit fires around the downtown landmark, quickly engulfing the elk in flames. Videos show a small inferno wrapped around the base of the landmark with some graffiti. It looks like “ACAB 1312” was sprayed on the statue that somehow advocates police brutality and racism.

As reported by RT, it’s unclear why protesters targeted the statue. It was donated by former mayor David P. Thompson back in 1900 to commemorate the elk herds that once populated the region. However, there was plenty of speculation about what the animal had done to deserve being consumed by flames.

After the mob torched the stature, Twitter users began to mock and theorize that perhaps the animal was a “slave owner” or a “white supremacist.”

“That elk owned several slaves and was one of the biggest cotton-farm owners around Portland,” joked one Twitter user. Others wondered if perhaps “extinct elk herds” represent the “last bastion of white supremacy” in Oregon. Conservative pundit Ian Miles Cheong jokingly applauded the protesters for finally finding a way to end racism.

Recently, demonstrators and rioters have targeted statues across the United States as part of the ongoing Black Lives Matters demonstrations, claiming that the landmarks are rooted in oppression.  BLM is funded by major corporations and George Soros. 

Protesters first toppled Confederate monuments but soon turned their attention to statues of historical figures such as Christopher Columbus and Thomas Jefferson.  Now, the elk seems to have been some kind of racist, but thank goodness BLM was there to torch it to teach the animal a lesson about racism.
