California Earthquake Cascadia subduction zone Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake Cascadia Subduction Zone Tsunami Commentary earth changes Earthquake Earthquakes Environment Intelwars Mt. Rainier preppers The Cascadia Subduction Zone West Coast Earthquake West Coast Tsunami

Yet another warning that makes it clear that we should all be bracing for a major seismic event along the west coast

While most Americans remain completely fixated on the upcoming presidential election, large earthquakes continue to rattle the Ring of Fire at an alarming rate.  On Monday, a magnitude 7.5 quake struck near the little town of Sand Point, Alaska, and it was felt over a very large area.  In fact, it is being reported that shaking could be felt “as far away as Chugiak, Anchorage and Bethel”.  Following the initial earthquake, there was a series of very large aftershocks.  As I write this article, there have already been 19 aftershocks of at least magnitude 4.0 in the region.  By the time most of you read this article, that number will almost certainly be higher.  Sadly, even though we have been witnessing a lot of shaking along the southern coast of Alaska and the west coast of the continental United States in recent months, very few experts seem concerned about the possibility that a very large seismic event could be coming.

But they should be.

Before I get to that, let’s talk about what just happened.  The magnitude 7.5 quake triggered a tsunami warning for almost everyone living along the southern Alaska coastline, and two relatively small tsunami waves were reported

The magnitude 7.5 earthquake near Sand Point, Alaska, generated a tsunami, Scott Langley with the National Tsunami Warning Center said Monday afternoon.

Langley said the tsunami sent two waves, each measuring 130 centimeters (4 feet, 3 inches) high. But observers onshore reported the waves appeared to be 1.5 feet (45.7 centimeters) and 2 feet (61 cm) over high tide.

The good news is that this event did not do a whole lot of damage, but it definitely frightened many of the local residents.  Here is just one example

Candace Nelson, her kids and dogs hid under the table as the earthquake shook Cold Bay, about 90 miles west of Sand Point.

“My kids are all doing good. Brooke, Wilder and Scout all huddled under our kitchen table till the shaking stopped,” she told CNN as the family waited for more news about the tsunami. “The dogs were more concerned as to what the heck we were doing under the table.”

The location where this earthquake happened is not too far from where we witnessed a magnitude 7.8 quake back in July.

Could it be possible that all of this activity is building up to something even larger?

According to one expert, the area where these quakes have been occurring is right where “the Pacific Plate actually goes underneath the North American Plate”…

“This is an area where the Pacific Plate is subducting underneath the North American Plate. And because of that, the Pacific Plate actually goes underneath the North American Plate, where it melts,” Caruso said, noting that’s why there are volcanoes in the region.

Further south along the Ring of Fire, a swarm of hundreds of earthquakes in southern California was getting international attention just a few weeks ago

Hundreds of small earthquakes continue to rattle southern California, sending light shaking into San Diego County, as experts raise the odds that a much larger tremor could strike in the coming days.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that hundreds of earthquakes had been reported by Wednesday night in the Salton Trough near Westmorland and more than a dozen more sizeable earthquakes on Thursday.

I have been warning over and over again that it is just a matter of time before “the Big One” finally hits California.  Scientists have told us that the San Andreas Fault has the potential “to unzip all at once”, and if that happens it would be a disaster unlike anything that we have ever seen before in all of U.S. history.  Experts have warned that some portions of southern California could sink by several feet “relatively instantaneously”, and that such an event “could plunge large parts of California into the sea almost instantly”.

Meanwhile, Steve Quayle and others have been relentlessly sounding the alarm about the Cascadia Subduction Zone.  If a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck along the Cascadia Subduction Zone right now, it would only take 15 to 20 minutes for the very first tsunami waves to start hitting the coast of Washington.  Oregon State University paleoseismologist Chris Goldfinger believes that such an event could produce a giant wall of water up to 100 feet high that would utterly destroy everything that it encounters.

In a previous article, I included a quote from the former head of FEMA’s Region X about what such a disaster would mean for those living in the Northwest

If the entire zone gives way at once, an event that seismologists call a full-margin rupture, the magnitude will be somewhere between 8.7 and 9.2. That’s the very big one.

…By the time the shaking has ceased and the tsunami has receded, the region will be unrecognizable. Kenneth Murphy, who directs FEMA’s Region X, the division responsible for Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, says, “Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast.”

In the Pacific Northwest, everything west of Interstate 5 covers some hundred and forty thousand square miles, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Eugene, Salem (the capital city of Oregon), Olympia (the capital of Washington), and some seven million people.

The phrase “everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast” has stuck with me ever since I first read that quote.

Scientists assure us that it is just a matter of time before this actually happens, but most people are not taking those warnings very seriously.

And let us not forget that there are several major volcanoes in the Northwest as well.

In particular, I have been deeply concerned about the potential for an eruption of Mt. Rainier for a very long time.  I once wrote an article in which I dubbed Mt. Rainier “the most dangerous mountain in the United States”, and that statement is definitely still true today.

Scientists tell us that someday a massive eruption of Mt. Rainier will send super-heated tsunamis of hot mud known as “lahars” racing toward highly populated communities in the Northwest at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.  For many, official warnings will come far too late and they will die before they even realize what hit them.

For the next several months, I will be watching seismic activity along the U.S. portion of the Ring of Fire much more carefully than normal.

There has been so much shaking going on already, and an unprecedented disaster could very literally happen at any moment.

Commentary Economic Crisis Financial Financial Problem Financial Problems Intelwars unemployed unemployment unemployment benefits

74% of families with children making less than $100,000 have “experienced serious financial problems” during this crisis

The reason why so many people are clamoring for Congress to get another stimulus bill passed is because an unprecedented number of households are in desperate financial need right now.  As you will see below, millions of Americans missed their rent or mortgage payments last month, millions missed their student loan payments, and millions are falling into poverty.  The economic downturn that was sparked by the coronavirus pandemic has stretched on far longer than most people originally anticipated, and many Americans are simply running out of money at this point.  In fact, one survey that was conducted not too long ago found that 40 percent of all households have “used up all or most of their savings” and 74 percent of families with children that make less than $100,000 a year have “experienced serious financial problems” during this crisis…

Nationwide, food insecurity has become a pervasive problem. The percentage of families with children who reported not having enough to eat more than tripled in July compared with 2019. One report found nearly half of American families lived with hunger in the summer.

Another found more than 40% of surveyed households with children had used up all or most of their savings by early August. Children in households making less than $100,000 have been especially affected: 74% of those families experienced serious financial problems.

Those are deeply alarming numbers.

If “nearly half” of U.S. families are living with hunger now, how bad will things get if the U.S. economy takes another turn for the worse?

One hard working American that has almost reached her breaking point is a 43-year-old veteran and mother of three named Kaneadsha Jones…

By early October, Kaneadsha Jones was close to giving up. It had been seven months since she or her husband had steady work. Seven months since her three school-age children, including a 14-year-old daughter with autism who is blind, nonverbal and immunocompromised, had been to school. Four months since a shooting on her block left her car and her family’s rented house in north Columbus, Ohio, riddled with bullet holes and her 12-year-old daughter struggling with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

When she received the first stimulus check from the federal government, she used it all to pay utility bills that were past due.

But since then there have been no more checks and the bills have just continued to pile up.

She continues to fight for the sake of her family, but she admits that she is really, really tired

“I’m so tired,” Jones said. “It seems nothing is getting a little better. The only thing that keeps me trying is my family.”

Have you ever felt like she is feeling right now?

I think that most of us have at some point in our lives.

All across the country, unemployed workers are becoming very desperate because they are starting to exhaust their unemployment benefits and they still haven’t been able to find jobs.  One such individual is a chemist in Ohio named Kate McAfee

New research from JPMorgan Chase Institute and the University of Chicago focused on 80,000 unemployed people shows savings built up when the government provided aid is now rapidly running out, leaving people like chemist Kate McAfee fretting about their futures.

“I’m still unemployed,” said McAfee, who was laid off from her job outside Cleveland back in April. “I’ve now exhausted my 26 weeks of unemployment here in Ohio and have moved on to the additional 13 weeks of extended benefits from the federal government.”

Since the pandemic started, more than 64 million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment benefits, and every single one of those workers has a unique story.

Most of them had at least some savings, but when you are not working month after month those savings tend to disappear very quickly.

Now as we approach the holiday season a lot of people have completely run out of money and lots of bills are starting to go unpaid.

For example, it is being reported that over 6 million households didn’t pay their rent or mortgage last month…

More than 6 million households failed to make their rent or mortgage payments in September, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Research Institute for Housing America, a sign that the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic is weighing on jobless Americans as Congress stalls on relief measures.

And we are also being told that approximately 26 million Americans didn’t make their student loan payment last month…

In September, roughly 26 million people missed their student loan payment. The proportion of student debt borrowers who missed a monthly payment has remained steady at 40% since May.

We have never seen anything like this before.

Just like during the last recession, vast numbers of Americans that once lived comfortable middle class lifestyles are rapidly falling into poverty.

In fact, one recent study found that 8 million Americans have fallen into poverty just since the month of May

Some eight million Americans have fallen below the poverty level since May after federal stimulus money dried up and Congress did not follow up with more relief legislation, according to a new study.

Meanwhile, the economic recovery has slowed down as more than 55 million Americans are now earning less than $26,200 a year – which is what the federal government considers the poverty line.

Coming into this year, most Americans were living paycheck to paycheck and were very deep in debt.

That works okay as long as the paychecks keep coming in, but once they stop things can take a disastrous turn very quickly.

Today, the average American has accumulated $90,460 in debt, and Generation X is drowning in more debt than anyone else…

  • Gen Z (ages 18 to 23): $9,593
  • Millennials (ages 24 to 39): $78,396
  • Gen X (ages 40 to 55): $135,841
  • Baby boomers (ages 56 to 74): $96,984
  • Silent generation (ages 75 and above): $40,925

The sad truth is that most of the U.S. population is simply not in any position to handle times of extreme financial stress.

Unfortunately, this pandemic is not going away any time soon, and that means that industries all over America will continue to let more workers go as economic conditions continue to deteriorate.

And as economic conditions continue to get worse, the level of economic suffering that Americans like Kaneadsha Jones and Kate McAfee are experiencing will continue to intensify.

This has already been such a challenging time for our country, and to be honest the days ahead are looking quite bleak at this point.

Commentary Conspiracy Economic Crisis Housing Crash Intelwars prepper preppers Prepping Relocating Storing Food

Why are so many Americans suddenly relocating, buying guns and storing up huge quantities of food?

In 2020, we have been watching hundreds of thousands of Americans relocate, gun sales have shattered all previous levels, and people are purchasing and storing huge stockpiles of food.  We have seen the American people get deeply concerned about the future before, but we have never seen anything quite like this.  It is definitely a major life decision to pack up everything you own and move to another part of the country, but that is precisely what countless Americans have been doing in recent months.  WABC wanted to know precisely how many people have been doing this in New York City, and the information that they were able to get from the United States Postal Service really surprised them

7 On Your Side Investigates requested from the United States Postal Service how many families requested a change of address and moved to zip codes outside of New York City, and the numbers are big.

In fact, those numbers show that over 246,000 New Yorkers “have filed a change of address request” just since the month of March…

Overall since March, more than 246,000 people have filed a change of address request. That’s an almost 100% increase compared to the same time period in 2019.

Of course people have been moving away from other major cities in very large numbers as well, and this has created a tremendous glut of empty apartments that need to be filled.

Because there is now so much supply and so little demand, apartment rental prices have been plummeting, and this has especially been the case in the San Francisco area

San Francisco saw the prices fall the furthest in September, according to data from Realtor.com, with costs for a one-bedroom unit falling by 24.2%.

Two other cities in California – San Mateo and Santa Clara – experienced the second and third largest drop in average one-bedroom rent prices, followed by Suffolk, Mass., and Manhattan.

Meanwhile, demand for housing in desirable rural and suburban areas has been skyrocketing.

For example, we are being told that there is a “stunning real estate boom” going on in Maine right now…

Maine has seen a stunning real estate boom as buyers from New York City, Boston and Washington DC flee for quieter pastures amid the pandemic, causing home values to surge 17 percent, supply to hit a historic low and properties to fly off the market in a matter of 11 days.

If I was looking to relocate to the Northeast, Maine would definitely be one of the places that I would consider.  It is quite beautiful, crime is generally not a major problem, and the population density is very low.

According to one real estate agent, people have been calling and asking her to “get me any house in Maine”, and she is doing her best to fulfill those requests.

Meanwhile, Americans have been feverishly buying guns as well.

In fact, the number of background checks that have been conducted this year has already broken the all-time record that was set last year…

The FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) – a widely accepted proxy – shows a 41% increase in activity during the first nine months of this year, compared to the same period in 2019, which was a record year. With 28.8 million background checks through the end of September, this year’s surge has already surpassed last year’s all-time high of 28.4 million.

While other industries have been deeply struggling in 2020, the gun industry is having a banner year, and many expect that to continue in 2021.

In a previous article, I discussed the fact that millions of Americans are also focused on storing up food right now.  In fact, one recent survey discovered that more than 50 percent of Americans “already have or plan to stockpile food and other essentials”

Slightly more than half of Americans in a recent poll from Sports and Leisure Research Group say they already have or plan to stockpile food and other essentials. The chief reason: fears of a resurgent pandemic, which could lead to disruptions such as new restrictions on businesses. On Oct. 2, the number of COVID-19 cases in the USA was its highest in almost two months.

At this point, so many Americans are stockpiling food that it has actually caused a very serious shortage of Mason jars

COVID-19 has caused shortages in coins, lumber and even aluminum cans. Now, add Mason jars to the list.

According to one small business owner, a twelve pack of jars will now often sell for “as much as $70”

“Some of them are as much as $70 for one 12 twelve pack of jars and they should be between $10 and $12 but nothing less than $20 dollars for a box of jars. So we can’t sell them at that, you know you just can’t make money doing that,” said Robin Hannon, owner of Timmy Crack Corn.

So why are so many Americans going to such extremes all of a sudden?

Well, there is no easy answer.

Of course many are concerned about the upcoming election, but that will come and go.

Others are worried that the next wave of the coronavirus pandemic could be even worse than what we have already experienced, but by now it has become clear that this isn’t the sort of pandemic that is going to kill millions of us.

Some people that I talk to believe that our economic problems and the civil unrest in our major cities will get worse, and I agree with that assessment.

But is that really a reason to pack up everything and head for the hills?

Ultimately, I think that many Americans understand that everything that we have been through so far is just the leading edge of something much larger.

Whether you want to call it “the big meltdown”, “the collapse of society” or “the perfect storm”, the truth is that the party is ending.

Every day we get more evidence that our society is unraveling right in front of our eyes, and I work very hard to document that evidence for my readers.

We are heading into times that are going to be absolutely catastrophic for our nation, and on a gut level a lot of people out there know that this is true.

So we should certainly not blame anyone that wants to move to the middle of nowhere, buy guns and stockpile lots of food.

In the end, the truth is that it is probably what just about all of us should be doing.

Commentary Conspiracy election Election 2020 Intelwars Politics Technology The 2020 Election The Big Social Media Companies

Are the big social media companies literally trying to determine who wins the presidential election?

In 2016, the big social media companies were criticized for allowing others to influence the outcome of the election, but in 2020 the big social media companies are directly interfering in the election more than anyone else is by a very wide margin.  They insist that they have a duty to prevent the flow of “harmful information”, but whenever they act it always seems to help Democrats and hurt Republicans.  It has become obvious that Facebook, Twitter and other large social media companies are trying to help Democrats win, and that is especially true when it comes to the presidential election.  No matter what you think of Joe Biden and no matter what you think of Donald Trump, all Americans should want the election to be fair.  Unfortunately, the big social media companies have discovered that they have the ability to sway public opinion on a massive scale, and this is the first election in which they are really flexing those muscles.  But if we allow those that control the levers of power on the Internet to determine the outcomes of our elections from now on, our system is doomed and the American experiment will be over.

On Thursday, the New York Post published a bombshell article about Hunter Biden that included some really shocking new revelations.  As soon as I read the article I recognized that it was very newsworthy and I immediately linked to it on The Most Important News, and other conservative websites did the same thing.

Meanwhile, Facebook and Twitter were working aggressively to limit the spread of the article

Facebook and Twitter took steps on Wednesday to limit the spread of a controversial New York Post article critical of Joe Biden, sparking outrage among conservatives and stoking debate over how social media platforms should tackle misinformation ahead of the US election.

In an unprecedented step against a major news publication, Twitter blocked users from posting links to the Post story or photos from the unconfirmed report. Users attempting to share the story were shown a notice saying: “We can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful.”

If Facebook and Twitter had taken similar steps when stuff was leaked about Trump over the years, we could forgive them for this sort of censorship.

But no matter where the leaks come from, and no matter how sketchy the sources are, the big social media companies always allow questionable stories about Trump to spread like wildfire.

They only step in when a story is going to be “harmful” to Biden, and that is fundamentally unfair.

In addition to preventing the spread of the story, Twitter actually decided to lock the New York Post out of their entire account.

When White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted about this story, they locked her account too.

20 years ago, it would have been unthinkable for someone to try to censor White House officials, but now it is happening on a regular basis.

Prominent conservatives like James Woods and Jack Posobiec were also locked out of their accounts by Twitter, and if you try to tweet any of the primary material mentioned in the New York Post story you might get locked out of your account too.

But anything goes when it comes to Trump.  You can say anything you like and spread any sort of wild rumors that you wish, and they will never do anything to you.

Republicans in the Senate such as Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz were absolutely furious when they realized what Facebook and Twitter were doing, and they demanded answers.

Unfortunately, Facebook and Twitter are not backing down.

And why should they?  They have been getting away with censoring political speech for years.

Earlier this month, conservative host Mark Levin was absolutely outraged when Facebook decided to shadowban his account in the middle of election season…

Facebook has just sent us this message. It’s a clear effort at censorship. Every link I post is from a legitimate source. But because so many people are seeing what I’m posting and we’re within weeks of the election it’s clear that Facebook is trying to influence the election’s outcome. It’s also clear Facebook is pushing a leftwing agenda.

Why don’t we ever hear about liberal voices getting censored like this?

Even more alarming is the fact that some Republican candidates for Congress are not being allowed to buy ads for their campaigns at all.  Aja Smith is an African-American conservative running in California’s 41st Congressional District, and Facebook has completely banned her from running political advertisements…

Just tried to run a FB ad to promote my FB page and it told me I cannot run political ads or promote my page! I am shadow-banned on Twitter now FB is giving me a hard time.

And other Republican candidates in California also report that they have been shadowbanned by the big social media companies

Buzz Patterson, candidate for California’s 7th Congressional District told the Globe he and his campaign have been censored and noticed shadow banning. Patterson has 114,100 Twitter followers, but few retweeted posts.

Eric Early, candidate for California’s 28th Congressional District says it appears Facebook has limited his followers at 23,000. On Twitter, Early has 84,800 followers, but his Tweets don’t get retweeted as much as they should.

If we allow Facebook and Twitter to keep doing this, it will just get worse with each passing election.

But so far nobody has found a way to stop them.

And once Democrats are in control in Washington, there will be very little that will be able to be done.

If Democrats are able to take the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives in November, the big social media companies will deserve a ton of the credit.

They may think that they are “saving America”, but the truth is that they are actually killing it.

In our entire history, political speech has never been stifled the way that it is being stifled today.  Our Constitution may still say that we are entitled to free speech, but those that control our most important online gathering places have a much different agenda.

Thank You For Your Transparency Report, Here’s Everything That’s Missing

Every major social media platform—from Facebook to Reddit, Instagram to YouTube—moderates and polices content shared by users. Platforms do so as a matter of self-interest, commercial or otherwise. But platforms also moderate user content in response to pressure from a variety of interest groups and/or governments.

As a consequence, social media platforms have become the arbiters of speech online, defining what may or may not be said and shared by taking down content accordingly. As the public has become increasingly aware and critical of the paramount role private companies play in defining the freedom of expression of millions of users online, social media companies have been facing increased pressure to stand accountable for their content moderation practices. In response to such demands, and partially to fulfill legal requirements stipulated by regulations like Germany’s NetzDG, Facebook and other social media companies publish detailed ‘transparency reports’ meant to give some insight into their moderation practices.

Transparency does not always equal transparency

Facebook’s most recent ‘community standards enforcement report’, which was released in August and also covers its subsidiary Instagram, is emblematic of some of the deficits of companies reporting on their own content moderation practices. The report gives a rough overview of the numbers of posts deleted, broken down according to the 10 policy areas Facebook uses to categorize speech (it is unclear whether or not Facebook uses more granular categories internally). These categories can differ between Facebook and Instagram. Per category, Facebook also reports how prevalent content of a certain type is on its platforms, which percentage of allegedly infringing content was removed before it was reported by users, and how many pieces of supposedly problematic content were restored later on.

But content moderation, and its impact, is always contextual. While Facebook’s sterile reporting of numbers and percentages can give a rough estimate of how many pieces of content of which categories get removed, it does not tell us why or how these decisions are taken. Facebook’s approach to transparency thus misses the mark, as actual transparency should allow outsiders to see and understand what actions are performed, and why. Meaningful transparency inherently implies openness and accountability, and cannot be satisfied by simply counting takedowns. That is to say that there is a difference between corporately sanctioned ‘transparency,’ which is inherently limited, and meaningful transparency that empowers users to understand Facebook’s actions and hold the company accountable.

This is especially relevant in light of the fundamental shift in Facebook’s approach to content moderation during the COVID-19 pandemic. As companies were unable to rely on their human content moderators, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube began relying much more heavily on automated moderation tools—despite the documented shortcomings of AI tools to consistently judge the social, cultural, and political context of speech correctly. As social media platforms ramp up their use of automated content moderation tools, it is especially crucial to provide actual explanations for how these technologies shape (and limit) people’s online experiences.

True transparency must provide context

So what would a meaningful transparency report look like? First of all, it should clarify the basics—how many human moderators are there, and how many cover each language? Are there languages for which no native speaker is available to judge the context of speech? What is the ratio of moderators per language? Such information is important in order to help understand (and avoid!) crises like when Facebook’s inability to detect hate speech directed against the Rohingya contributed to widespread violence in Myanmar.

Real transparency should also not stop at shedding light on the black boxes that algorithmic content moderation systems appear to be from the outside. In order to give users agency vis-à-vis automated tools, companies should explain what kind of technology and inputs are used at which point(s) of content moderation processes. Is such technology used to automatically flag suspicious content? Or is it also used to judge and categorize flagged content? When users report content takedowns, to which extent are they dealing with automated chat bots, and when are complaints reviewed by humans? Users should also be able to understand the relationship between human and automated review—are humans just ‘in the loop’, or do they exercise real oversight and control over automated systems?

Another important pillar of meaningful transparency are the policies that form the basis for content takedowns. Social media companies often develop these policies without much external input, and adjust them constantly. Platforms’ terms of service or community guidelines usually also don’t go into great detail or provide examples to clearly delineate acceptable speech. Transparency reports could, for example, include information on how moderation policies are developed, whether and which external experts or stakeholders have contributed, how often they are amended, and to which extent.

Closely related: transparency reports should describe and explain how human and machine-based moderators are trained to recognize infringing content. In many cases, the difference is between, for example, incitement to terrorism and counterspeech against extremism. For moderators—who work quickly—the line between the two can be difficult to judge, and is dependent on the context of the statement in question. That’s why it’s crucial to understand how platforms are preparing their moderators to understand and correctly judge such nuances.

Real transparency is empowering, not impersonal

Meaningful transparency should empower people to understand how a social media platform is governed, to know their rights according to that governance model, and to hold companies accountable whenever they transgress it. We welcome companies’ efforts to at least offer a glimpse into their content moderation machine room. But they still have a long way to go.

This is why we have undertaken a process to review the Santa Clara Principles on Accountability and Transparency in Content Moderation, a process that is currently underway. We look forward to sharing the conclusions of our research and contributing to the future of corporate transparency.

Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination has put Roe v. Wade back into the national spotlight

When President Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the open seat on the Supreme Court, we immediately witnessed an explosion of speculation about what this could mean for the future of Roe v. Wade.  Most pro-life activists cheered Barrett’s nomination because they assumed that she would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade if given the opportunity, and many pro-choice activists warned that America would soon resemble “the Handmaid’s Tale” if Barrett was confirmed.  But as President Trump explained during the first presidential debate, nobody actually knows how she would rule on Roe v. Wade, and it is very unlikely that she will give a direct answer to any questions about Roe v. Wade that she is asked during the Senate hearings that are currently taking place.

I truly wish that Barrett would tell us how she would rule, because it is of the utmost importance.

Roe v. Wade has been very hotly debated ever since it was decided in 1973, and Barrett’s nomination has put abortion back into the national spotlight.  On Monday, a brand new ABC News/Washington Post poll was released which shows that Americans overwhelmingly want the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v. Wade

In the ABC News/Washington Post poll, 62 percent of those surveyed said the highest court needs to uphold Roe v. Wade – the landmark Supreme Court case used as the basis of abortion law in the U.S.

On the other hand, 24 percent of American voters say they want the case overturned, which would effectively end abortion rights as they’re known.

I don’t know if I have the words to describe how deeply saddened I am by those numbers.

By more than a two to one margin, Americans say that they support Roe v. Wade, and other surveys have come up with similar numbers.

For example, just consider this poll which was taken in September…

A majority of American adults say they do not support the Supreme Court completely overturning Roe v. Wade, according to new data from the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Tracking Poll.

Sixty-six percent of adults say that they don’t believe the Supreme Court should completely overturn the decision that established a woman’s right to an abortion in at least the first three months of a pregnancy. Twenty-nine percent of adults say they do want the Court to completely overturn the ruling.

The numbers are slightly different, but once again we see another survey in which Americans favor keeping Roe v. Wade by more than a two to one margin.

And as ABC News has pointed out, other polls that have been conducted in recent years have also shown that Americans overwhelmingly want Roe v. Wade kept in place…

Support for Roe is similar to results in previous ABC/Post polls, from 2005 to 2010, asking how new members of the court should vote on the issue; anywhere from 59% to 65%, averaging 62%, said Roe should be upheld. An average of 34% said Roe should be overturned, more than in this poll, and fewer, an average of 5%, had no opinion.

I know that a lot of people out there have been hoping for a nationwide awakening that would cause a seismic shift in our national moral values, but these numbers tell us that it is simply not happening.

In this latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, even 44 percent of “evangelical Protestants” want Roe v. Wade to remain the law of the land

Among groups, 66% of women say Roe should be upheld, as do 58% of men. Support for upholding the law peaks among people with postgraduate degrees (83%), Democrats and liberals (both 81%), moderates (75%) and those with no religious preference (also 75%). This drops to lows among conservatives (37%), Republicans (40%), evangelical Protestants (44%) and people with no more than a high school education (51%).

But many conservatives are hoping that Roe v. Wade could be overturned anyway if we can get enough conservative justices on to the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh have already shown that they are definitely not “conservative”, and I do not believe that either one of them would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.

As for Amy Coney Barrett, the truth is that we don’t know how she would vote, and President Trump made that abundantly clear during the first presidential debate

“Roe v. Wade. That’s also at stake right now,” Joe Biden said during the presidential debate, arguing Judge Amy Coney Barrett should not be confirmed to fill the seat vacated after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the election. He said abortion rights granted by Roe v. Wade were “also on the ballot.”

“Why is it on the ballot? It’s not on the ballot,” Trump retorted. “There’s nothing happening there.”

“You don’t know what her views are,” Trump said of Barrett.

However, I do believe that Amy Coney Barrett has personal pro-life beliefs, and this is reflected in her past actions

During her years as a law professor, Barrett was a member of the University of Notre Dame’s “Faculty for Life,” and in 2006 she signed an anti-abortion letter that accompanied a newspaper ad calling for “an end to the barbaric legacy of Roe v. Wade.” But she has said she would keep her personal views out of the courtroom.

But from a legal perspective, she has never been willing to publicly say that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided, and she has never been willing to publicly commit to overturning it.

And in her opening statement for the current Senate hearings, she stated that it is her philosophy that the courts “are not designed to solve every problem or right every wrong in our public life”

‘But courts are not designed to solve every problem or right every wrong in our public life. The policy decisions and value judgments of government must be made by the political branches elected by and accountable to the People.’

So the truth is that it is very unclear how she would rule on Roe v. Wade if she is confirmed.

Sadly, what is clear is that the vast majority of the American people want Roe v. Wade to remain in place, and most states would continue to keep abortion legal even if Roe v. Wade was overturned someday.

Needless to say, this has enormous implications for the future of our society.  If we continue on the path that we are on, there is no future for America, and right now there is absolutely no indication that we will be changing course any time soon.
