The Canning Shortage of 2020: Here’s How You Can Find These Essential Supplies

This article was originally published by Sara Tipton at Tess Pennington’s Ready Nutrition.

Sometimes it feels like 2020 is out to get all of us.  Especially those of us who can and store our own food.  Canning jars are impossible to come by and if you do find some, the prices are outrageous. Here’s why, and what you can do about it.

The shortage can be blamed on several things.  A lot of people say there’s an uptick in people trying to learn to can.  The number of Americans growing gardens increased, therefore, so did the willingness to learn to can.   Of course, sales have gone up as people try to become more self-sufficient, which is always recommended.  But that means those of us who regularly can and buy a few jars each year to replace those our kids dropped won’t be able to do so.  Most of us have plenty, but replacements would be nice.

So what do you do if you want to can some food, but can’t find jars? I suggest asking a neighbor if they have any spares or you could check-in garage sales.  I have noticed that some people purchased a boatload of jars with the intent to can, but never did. Those jars tend to make their way to garage sales. (We have also found great preparedness items, such as food-grade storage buckets and lids at garage sales.)

Unfortunately, there’s no real substitute for those glass mason jars and if your budget allows, just buy what you can for the ridiculously high prices being asked for them online. But Weck jars come close. Made in Germany, Weck jars can be used for canning, however, the process has not been confirmed “safe” by the USDA.

These would be great to use as other storage jars, however, if you are concerned about canning with them.  That could reduce the use of jars for other things making the few you do have available for canning use. For example, we use mason jars to keep nuts and seeds in our refrigerator. We have several different kinds and when we needed jars, we went to the dollar store and purchased some to use just for refrigerator storage that we didn’t want to can with. This netted us 5 more jars to put some pickles and carrots in. Dollar store jars don’t look as nice as the Weck jars, so if aesthetics is important to you, you may choose to consider the Weck jars.

Don’t let your budget or one defeatest trip to get jars to get in the way of a lifestyle of more self-sufficiency. Continue to check at your local dollar stores, I do every time I go by because you never know. A friend of mine actually found some canning jars on the clearance shelf way up high almost hidden and was able to buy them. I was not so lucky, but that’s why I like to buy cheap jars just to store my seeds in to free up other jars I was using for storage, at the time.

Brainstorm other ways to get jars. Another suggestion I have is bartering. Maybe you know someone who bought some mason jars and never uses them. Ask to buy them, or offer them a jar of food or two in exchange for the jars. Bartering is a long lost skill but society was once built upon it!

I’ve discovered in the past few months that you really cannot have a “too big” harvest or too many canning jars. If this coronavirus pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that those who already had a garden knew how to can, and leaned toward the self-sufficient lifestyle were doing the right thing all along.

Grocery Stores Are Prepping For a 2nd Wave Of COVID-19 Panic Buying

The mainstream media continues to report on the increasing number of cases during this scamdemic. They are obviously gearing us up for something, and grocery stores are preparing for the second wave of panic buying.

If panic buying has not yet returned to your area, you may want to stay alert and potentially expect it soon. Luckily, most readers of this site have figured out that they need a bug out plan and have stored enough food and water to get them through several months of an emergency. If you have yet to prepare at all, you may be too late. Grocery stores are now expecting a second round of panic buying over the second wave.  But this time, it isn’t just the plandemic that has people panicked.  The upcoming election chaos is also taking its toll.

As reported by Today, with a second wave of COVID-19 looming and fear over potential preplanned unrest around the presidential election, consumers are aggressively stocking up on various foods. Grocers are struggling to keep up with the demand for some foods.

Grocery Stores “Prep” For Second Wave Of COVID-19 By Stocking Up On Inventory

“As of now what we are seeing is the start of the second wave of panic,” said Chris Mentzer, the director of operations for Rastelli Market Fresh in New Jersey. “Our customers keep telling me how they are looking for any type of freezer to purchase so they can start stocking up their homes now. Their main concern is meat.” He explained that customers are mainly looking to buy and freeze beef and poultry — ground beef, steaks, roasts and all varieties of chicken.

They’re also starting to buy a lot of frozen meals and frozen pizzas,” said Mentzer. “We are seeing anything that can be microwaved quickly or easily made in the oven for kids, fly off the shelves, as people are preparing for schools and colleges to be closed this winter — along with a run on dried goods and paper goods, as well.” –Today

Buyin frozen pizzas and extra meat is a good idea if you expect the power to stay on, and that’s kind of up in the air right now too.

If the grid goes down, all those frozen pizzas will not be able to be heated up in a microwave or baked in an oven nor will they last forever unfrozen. Buying vegetables to can or dry goods or canned goods is a better option, but readers of this site already know that.

The good news is that if people truly are buying gout the frozen junk food, there will be a lot of excellent vegetables left that you can purchase and can, especially if your garden was meager this year. I like to rab a jug of vinegar every time I am in the grocery store. This way, there’s plenty to can with. You should also consider stocking up on heirloom seeds that grow well in your area.

10 Survival Seeds You Must Stockpile For When The System Collapses

The fact that most people are stocking up on frozen meals could also mean other options such as organic peanut butter and olive oil (coconut oil too) will be available. Those are good sources of fats and can fill you up – and will be a lot better for you than a frozen pizza. Again, things readers of this site already know. The oils can also be cooked with to add sustenance to meals.

PREPPING FOR THE UPCOMING GOVERNMENT-INDUCED FOOD SHORTAGES

The good news is that we can bank on others’ weaknesses when it comes to prepping and the things that you should actually be storing will be more likely to be readily available.

A List Of 50 Things You Should Get Right Now To Prepare For The Chaotic Events Of The Next 12 Months

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.

People have been asking me to do an article like this for quite some time.  In all the years that I have been writing, I have never seen so many of my readers so alarmed about our immediate future.

Over and over again, I have been getting emails from people asking for advice about how to prepare for what is ahead, and so many of them are using the word “urgency” to describe what they are feeling.  And I can definitely identify with that, because around the middle of last year that is a word that I started using constantly.  I felt an urgency about 2020 that I had never felt about any other upcoming year, and there were certain things that I knew that I had to get done.  One of those things that I had to get done was my new book, and it is now finished.  The plan is to release it this month, and after reading it there will be no doubt about why I have been feeling such a sense of urgency in recent months.

I want to warn you in advance that the list below is not an exhaustive list.

Instead, it is meant to be a very basic starting guide.  There are many other things that could (and probably should) be added to this list, and I very much encourage readers to leave comments after this article with their own suggestions and recommendations.  We should always be willing to learn from one another because nobody is an expert on everything.

To me, the four primary priorities for preparing for an emergency scenario are food, water, energy, and shelter.  Once you have got those four basic areas covered, you can certainly build on that foundation by addressing other considerations.

In the title of this article I use the phrase “the next 12 months”, but I do not mean to imply that everything will be fine after those 12 months are over.  In fact, I am convinced that our problems are only going to intensify as time rolls along.

And I certainly hope that you will not need everything on this list during the next 12 months.  Hopefully, you will not need to use some of these items for a few years.  But this is definitely a great opportunity to purchase many of these things because a lot of them are only going to become more expensive and more difficult to acquire the worse conditions get.

In putting this list together, I was envisioning a scenario in which most of you will be sheltering at home rather than “bugging out” to an alternative location.  In a “bugging out” scenario, this list would look quite a bit different.

Also, I didn’t address self-defense on this list, but without a doubt, it is very important.  In fact, if you live in or near a major city, it is imperative to have a plan for defending yourself and your family.  For years, I have been encouraging readers to move away from the major cities, but for a lot of people that simply isn’t possible at this moment.  More than 51 million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment so far this year, and so a good stable job is an extremely valuable thing to have at this moment.  If your job is keeping you in a potentially dangerous area right now, you will also want to have a plan for “bugging out” to a more remote location if the need arises.

With all of that being said, the following are 50 things that I am encouraging everyone to stock up on in order to prepare for the chaotic times that are coming…

Are there certain key items that you would add to this list?  If so, please feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts below.

I understand that there are a lot of people out there that are feeling extreme financial stress during this severe economic downturn, and acquiring all of the items on this list may not be possible.

And that is okay.  Our job is to do the very best that we can with what we have, and we shall trust God with the rest.

I know that a lot of people out there don’t like it when I write such “negative” articles.  But I wouldn’t be doing my duty if I didn’t warn people about what was coming, and I actually believe that articles like this give people a lot of hope.

There is hope in understanding what is coming, there is hope in getting prepared, and there is hope in connecting with others that are also preparing.

Just like we witnessed during the early stages of this COVID-19 pandemic, the people that will be freaking out when things get really crazy will be those that do not understand what is happening and haven’t made any preparations in advance.

Millions upon millions of Americans will not be able to handle the times that are coming, but we prepare because we believe that with God’s help we can make it through all of the storms that are ahead.

If you wish to mock us for being preppers, please feel free to do so, but you also need to be prepared to issue one whopper of an apology when you are forced to turn to one of us for help one day.
