Computer repairman at center of ‘Biden laptop’ scandal breaks silence after reportedly receiving death threats: I’m no ‘Russian agent’

John Paul Mac Isaac, the computer repairman at the center of a reported Biden family scandal, is speaking out against any assertions that he is a Russian agent or hacker.

Mac Isaac made the remarks in a new video shared to YouTube on Saturday.

What’s a brief history here?

Mac Isaac previously stated that he was in receipt of a laptop computer and hard drive containing highly sensitive information regarding former Vice President Joe Biden, his son Hunter Biden, and purported business dealings with Ukraine.

In November, Mac Isaac’s lawyer, Brian Della Rocca, said that Mac Isaac closed his Wilmington, Delaware, computer repair shop after receiving death threats. A neighbor also told the outlet that Mac Isaac left town.

Hunter has not spoken about the laptop, and the former vice president said that the allegations were nothing more than a “desperate campaign to smear me and my family.” He did not confirm whether the laptop belonged to his son.

What are the details of the new video?

As highlighted by the New York Post, Mac Isaac spoke out in the video insisting that he is not a double agent.

“For two generations, the Mac Isaac family has fought for the entirety of the Cold War against communism in the ’70s,” he said. “That’s why it’s completely absurd that why anyone would ever consider me to be a Russian agent or influenced by Russians. I am proud of my family, I’m proud of my country. I am proud to be an American.”

Elsewhere in the three-minute video, titled “The Truth,” Mac Isaac added, “For the record, I am not nor have I ever been a hacker. Those guys make so much more money than I do. I was hired — never paid — to perform a data transfer from a MacBook Pro to an external hard drive. The signed paperwork clearly states the process and sets the expectations. There’s no magic or Hollywood. The process is no different than dragging or dropping from a USB drive. The only difference is I had to perform some surgery on the Mac to get it to boot.”

Mac Isaac also said that he is absolutely not a hacker, which he said would be a “death sentence” in his industry.

“To imply that I’m a hacker or that information is hacked has an irreversible impact on my business and my character,” he added.

Lawmaker requests special counsel investigation into Hunter Biden, ‘potentially incriminating contents’ of laptop

Could Hunter Biden be the subject of the next special counsel investigation? That’s what Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) wants.

Buck sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr on Monday requesting that the Department of Justice initiate a special counsel investigation into the son of the media-declared president-elect, centering on Hunter Biden’s “conduct” and the “potentially incriminating contents” on the laptop in the FBI’s possession that purportedly belongs to Biden.

A special counsel investigation is critical for maintaining confidence in national security, Buck said.

“This investigation is critical to defending the integrity of our republic and ensuring a potential Biden Administration will not be the subject of undue foreign interference,” Buck wrote. “Americans have the right to know whether Mr. Biden’s reported ties to foreign governments will make him the subject of blackmail attempts or other nefarious efforts to undermine U.S. national security or otherwise improperly influence American foreign policy.”

Buck went on to compare the necessity of a special counsel investigation now to when Robert Mueller was tasked with leading a special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“As you know, the Attorney General is granted the statutory authority to appoint a Special Counsel under 28 U.S.C. § 515 and 28 CFR § 600 to investigate and prosecute any matter that would present a conflict of interest for the Department or other extraordinary circumstances,” Buck wrote.

“Similar to when the DOJ appointed Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III, it is critical that this investigation continue free from political interference, no matter who is in the White House. We must guarantee the integrity of our government and the security of our republic,” the Colorado Republican added.

Barr has already appointed U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is investigating the origins of the Russia investigation, as a special counsel, essentially preventing the incoming Biden administration from interfering in Durham’s work.

What’s the background?

The New York Post published a bombshell story in mid-October reporting that the paper had obtained the hard drive to a laptop that allegedly had belonged to Hunter Biden. The laptop, which had been dropped off at a Delaware computer repair shop in 2019 and never picked up, turned out to be in the possession of the FBI for unknown reasons.

The story was significant for many reasons. Most importantly, emails on the hard drive, purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden, showed that Joe Biden had been more involved in Hunter Biden’s overseas work than the former vice president previously admitted.

Biden, however, has denied any wrongdoing.

Still, Democrats claimed the laptop story was “Russian disinformation” meant to sway the election in President Donald Trump’s favor just weeks before the election. Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe later refuted such allegations.

“Let me be clear, the intelligence community doesn’t believe that, because there’s no intelligence that supports that, and we have shared no intelligence with Chairman [Adam] Schiff or any other member of Congress that Hunter Biden’s laptop is part of some Russian disinformation campaign — it’s simply not true,” Ratcliffe said in October.

Details about the laptop and why the FBI seized it remain murky. Fox News reported that investigators took the laptop in connection to a money-laundering investigation. Details about that investigation were not made public, nor has the FBI confirmed that such an investigation took place.

The most recent development in the story happened last month, when the computer repair shop owner closed his business and allegedly disappeared after receiving death threats.

NPR tells readers the Hunter Biden story is a ‘waste’ of time and a ‘pure distraction,’ so they’re not reporting on it

NPR managing editor Terence Samuels acknowledged Thursday that the news outlet has not been reporting on the Hunter Biden laptop story because the editorial staff there doesn’t want to “waste” readers’ time on what they consider “pure distractions.”

What are the details?

On Thursday, NPR’s Samuels explained to readers that the Hunter Biden laptop story is a waste of their time and they don’t need to look into it.

“We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions,” Samuels said. “And quite frankly, that’s where we ended up, this was … a politically driven event and we decided to treat it that way.”

His response was included in NPR’s Public Editor newsletter, written by Poynter’s Kelly McBride.

In the newsletter, McBride included a question from a reader, who asked, “Someone please explain why NPR has apparently not reported on the Joe Biden, Hunter Biden story in the last week or so that Joe did know about Hunter’s business connections in Europe that Joe had previously denied having knowledge?”

In response, McBride wrote:

There are many, many red flags in that New York Post investigation. NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik detailed most of them here. Intelligence officials warn that Russia has been working overtime to keep the story of Hunter Biden in the spotlight. Even if Russia can’t be positively connected to this information, the story of how Trump associates Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani came into a copy of this computer hard drive has not been verified and seems suspect. And if that story could be verified, the NY Post did no forensic work to convince consumers that the emails and photos that are the basis for their report have not been altered.

“But,” she continued before quoting Samuels, “the biggest reason you haven’t heard much on NPR about the Post story is that the assertions don’t amount to much.”

What’s the background?

Since the controversy hit the internet last week, it has been treated as unwelcome, to say the least, in left-wing media circles.

Perhaps the greatest example of this occurred the very same day the New York Post published their “smoking gun” email report about former Vice President Joe Biden’s alleged meeting with a top Burisma executive, when Facebook and Twitter censored the story before fact-checking it.

Since then, the story has received comparatively little coverage among left-leaning publications, especially when contrasted to the coverage granted to reports such as the New York Times’ publication of President Trump’s tax returns.

While the reason for this is obvious to most — the news outlets would prefer not to report on a story that could be damaging to their preferred candidate — few have come out and said as much. NPR at least acknowledged the obvious.

Anything else?

Shortly after the story broke, Democratic lawmakers and former intelligence officials began parroting the narrative that the story was part of a Russian disinformation campaign, but that claim has been repudiated by current Justice Department and intelligence officials.

Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe rejected the claim Monday, saying there is “no intelligence” supporting it. Then on Tuesday, the Department of Justice and the FBI confirmed his assessment.
