Crook on parole brutally beats woman on NYC subway train after she tried to prevent sleeping rider from being robbed, police say

A man who served three stints in the New York state prison system over the last 15 years — and has been on parole since January — was charged in connection with a brutal attack on a woman on a Brooklyn subway train, police told the New York Daily News.

What are the details?

Police told the paper that the 53-year-old victim was trying to prevent a fellow subway rider from being robbed Sunday morning.

The victim was riding the Coney Island-bound D train to a photo shoot when she spotted the suspect sitting next to a sleeping man with a full backpack, the Daily News said.

The suspect initially backed off when the victim nudged the snoozing man awake — but then the suspect charged back and knocked her to the floor of the train, the paper said.

‘He whaled on me like a caged animal’

The victim told the Daily News she suffered facial cuts, two black eyes, and a fractured finger before the suspect fled at the Union Street stop. She added to the paper that her attacker left her face “absolutely unrecognizable.”

“He kicked me from behind,” she recounted to the Daily News. “He whaled on me like a caged animal. I rolled under the seat to get away from him. I guess if he had a boot on, I’d have no bones left in my face. The pain was excruciating. I was violently attacked. There was no reason for it.”

Who is the suspect?

Laking Bristow, 35, was charged with felony and misdemeanor assault after a subway clerk recognized him from photos released by police, the paper said.

Bristow’s arraignment was pending Friday in Brooklyn Criminal Court, the Daily News said.

His times spent in prison were for robbery, grand larceny, and most recently gun possession, the paper said, adding that he was conditionally released on parole in January.

According to a June 2012 police blotter report from amNew York, transit cops arrested Laking Bristow, 27, on a train at the Eighth Avenue subway station at 14th Street around 3:40 a.m. June 27 for taking money from a passenger’s pocket. The outlet said Bristow also was charged with weapons possession after two razor blades were found tucked in his socks.

Assault Baltimore Intelwars Physical attack Police Sneak attack Violence watch

VIDEO: Man bashed in back of head with bricks, falls face-first to sidewalk. Observers recording sneak attack laugh and howl.

Baltimore police on Monday afternoon told TheBlaze they have not yet located the victim or suspect in a shocking daylight attack caught on video.

What are the details?

Video emerged Monday on social media showing a man crossing a street and another man sneaking up behind him and slamming him in the back of the head, which resulted in the victim falling face-first to the sidewalk.

Just before the victim was hit in the head, a voice — presumably from one of the people recording the video across the street — can be heard whispering, “bitch you bet’ not run.” After the victim falls to the sidewalk, at least two people can be heard laughing and hollering in response.

Here’s the clip:

One person yelled something to the effect of, “Oh my God, he’s done!”

The victim appeared to lay motionless on the sidewalk while the man who hit him ran off.

What did police have to say?

According to a police report, the attack took place just after 6:30 p.m. Sunday on the 100 block of West Hamburg Street — and neither the victim nor the suspect were at the scene when police arrived. Officers, however, said they observed a pool of blood on the north sidewalk.

The witness who called police said he heard a loud argument between two men. After one of the men walked away, the witness said the other man picked up two bricks, approached the other man from behind, and hit him on the head. After the attack, the suspect ran from the scene toward the Sharp Leadenhall Apartments. The witness told police he doesn’t know the victim or the suspect. Police said the victim is white and the suspect is black.

Anything else?

The video apparently was posted on Instagram and soon deleted. It isn’t clear whether the Instagram user who posted the video also recorded it or knows either of the men involved in the incident.

Matt Walsh of the Daily Wire noted the original Instagram caption:

How are folks reacting?

As you can no doubt guess, those who have viewed the clip have been uniformly shocked and appalled by it:

  • “Buy more guns. Defend yourself. No one is going to do it for you,” one commenter wrote.
  • “This is disgusting,” another commenter said. “These animals need to be found, prosecuted and put away for a long time. Why do that to any living being?”
  • “The laughter after it happens is chilling,” another person observed.
  • “The number of these type of ambushes is horrifying! So what do we do now, just film this s**t, post online, and do nothing? I’ve haven’t seen/heard anything about this man’s condition or if anyone helped him,” another commenter wrote. “If this is the New America so many are calling for, we’re doomed.”

Pro-Biden women steal MAGA hat from 7-year-old boy, assault mom in viral video. Police just made an arrest.

Police have arrested a Wilmington, Delaware, woman who was seen stealing a “Make America Great Again” hat from a 7-year-old boy in a viral video.

What happened?

The video, taken outside the venue for the virtual Democratic National Convention on Thursday, shows two women harass a mother and her young son. The women ripped a pro-President Donald Trump sign and stole a MAGA hat from the boy, whose mother filmed the altercation.

The mother then followed the women through a parking lot. One of the women threatened to assault the mother, who pleaded that she return her son’s hat.

When a male bystander attempted to retrieve the hat, the woman holding it then punched him in the face.

The situation continued to escalate from there, with one of the women eventually assaulting the mother. The video stopped as she was being assaulted.

The video, which was posted by Students for Trump and received attention from Donald Trump Jr., has received more than 4.5 million views. According to Fox News, the White House has even contacted the boy.

Who did police arrest?

On Friday, Wilmington police arrested 21-year-old Olivia Winslow, charging her with first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, endangering the welfare of a child, WDEL-TV reported.

The second woman has yet to be arrested.

From WDEL:

Court records, obtained by WDEL, report the victim telling police the woman who’s yet to be arrested “forcefully” snatched a political sign from her hand while Winslow stole the MAGA hat and handed it to her alleged accomplice. Winslow is also accused of knocking a hat off an adult woman’s head. As the victim’s 7-year-old son went to retrieve the hat off the ground, the woman who’s yet to be arrested attempted to stomp on the hat, but stomped on the boy’s hand, according to statements in court records. The little boy wasn’t hurt, but did begin to cry, police said.

The woman who’s yet to be arrested is accused of punching a third victim, a man, in the face, resulting in a small laceration to his lip which caused him “substantial pain” the victim told police in court records. The woman who hasn’t been arrested then threw the MAGA hat over a fence and struck the adult woman in the face with a closed fist, which did not result in injury, court records said.

Winslow was released from jail after being arraigned.

Chicago BLM activist warns people will ‘get ran over’ if city doesn’t cave to demands: ‘We’re not asking’

A Black Lives Matter activist in Chicago warned this week that if city leaders do not cave to the movement’s demands, then residents should prepare to “get ran over.”

The activist blasted Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, for “not protecting the black women in this city,” claiming Lightfoot’s response to police brutality has been to “sic her dogs on us” — a reference to the Chicago Police Department — and “beat us and arrest us and steal our lives from us.”

“We see you for who you are — you’re not fooling anybody,” the activist went on to say, accusing Lightfoot of “creating problems in black and brown communities to protect white people.”

That’s when the activist threatened city residents.

“This is our city, our city, and we’re taking this s*** back. Point back. Period. End of discussion,” she said. “We have demands and they need to be met and I feel like I’ve been saying this too much.”

“We’re not asking you anything. We’re telling you what’s about to happen with your permission or not,” she went on to say. “You can listen to us or you can get ran over. And that’s all I have to say.”

As TheBlaze previously reported, Black Lives Matter activists in Chicago do not believe rioters should face consequences for the mass looting that occurred in the city several weeks ago, which caused an estimated $60 million in damages.

In fact, Black Lives Matter organizer Ariel Atkins justified the looting and rioting as “reparations” to which he said the black community is entitled.

“I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,” Atkins said, WMAQ-TV reported. “That makes sure that person has clothes.”

“That is reparations,” Atkins added. “Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.”

Group of teens brutally beat off-duty NYPD officer after he tells them he’s an officer: report

A group of unruly teens reportedly carried out a brutal assault on off-duty New York City Police Officer Cagney Ramos while he was on his way to work.

What are the details?

The incident took place on Saturday, according to a Friday report from the New York Daily News.

Ramos was minding his business on his way to work via Penn Station when a horde of teens converged on Ramos, who, due to their harassment, was forced to identify himself as an officer of the law.

According to the outlet, the 33-year-old Ramos, who is reportedly assigned to the World Trade Center Command in Lower Manhattan, said the teens started off their attack by punching his backpack and trying to knock his baseball cap off of his head.

When Ramos told them he is a police officer, the group apparently decided to take the vicious attack to a new level.

The as-yet identified suspects then allegedly began punching the officer, and continuously kicked him until he fell to the ground. While Ramos was down on the ground, the teens reportedly spit on him before running off.

Medics arrived on the scene, according to the outlet, and took the officer to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Daily News reported that Ramos’ injuries could be described as “deep cuts to his face, ear, and arm.”

A Daily News reporter visited Ramos at his home, where the police officer reportedly said, “I’m fine, man. I don’t want to talk about it.”

No arrests in the alleged attack have been made, but the MTA Police Department continue to investigate the beating.

Anything else?

In July, several NYPD officers were attacked on the Brooklyn Bridge after they attempted to maintain control of two demonstrations against law enforcement officials.

Three suspects were arrested in connection with the attack.

At the time, The Blaze reported that eight officers were injured — including a sergeant, lieutenant, and Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

One police officer reportedly lost consciousness during the incident.

Woman in viral video deliberately coughs in face of brain tumor patient recording her. Police have charged her with assault.

A woman who was caught in a viral video deliberately coughing on another shopper at Pier 1 has been charged with assault.

The incident happened in June at a Pier 1 store in Jacksonville, Florida.

Heather Sprague posted the video and a description of her version of the events to her Facebook page and it quickly went viral.

“I had an appointment in the Town Center area, so I donned my mask and ducked into a store to escape the heat while I waited for my appointment time,” Sprague wrote. “There were two small children wandering around the store unattended for an extended period, and the little guy was doing the potty dance.”

Sprague was wearing a mask because she has a compromised immune system due to treatments she was receiving for a brain tumor.

“It became apparent that they belonged to a woman at the register who was becoming increasingly belligerent. She was screaming at, swearing, insulting, and threatening the staff as she demanded to return an item she didn’t have with her, just a photo of the item on her phone. The staff were professional and respectful. But they couldn’t return an item she didn’t actually have with her,” she claimed.

“She continued to rage, all the while her poor little boy was squirming and asking for a bathroom, which she would have needed to leave the store to find. When she positioned herself so the clerks couldn’t exit the checkout area and screamed that she would stay right there, yelling as loud as she wanted, until all their customers left… I stood at a distance, pulled out my phone and wordlessly began filming,” Sprague explained.

The video shows the reaction of the woman, who took notice of Sprague and walked over to cough in her face while she recorded. The woman says she’s going to cough in Sprague’s face before she does it.

That video was shared more than 34,000 times and had 4.2 million views.

Police later identified the woman as Debra Hunter and charged her with assault.

Assault Coronavirus COVID-19 Intelwars Mask mandate Masks McDonalds

McDonald’s workers report verbal and physical assaults for asking people to wear masks

A survey found that nearly half of McDonald’s workers reported being verbally or physically assaulted for asking customers to wear masks, illustrating how contentious the debate over mask mandates has become in the U.S., Business Insider reported.

The Service Employees International Union surveyed more than 4,000 McDonald’s workers, and 44% of those workers reported some form of assault by customers they approached about wearing masks as a COVID-19 precaution.

Some of those assaults have even sent workers to the hospital, leaving workers feeling like the company has put them in a bad position:

One McDonald’s worker who was assaulted at work is Maria Resendiz, who visited the hospital in late June after being grabbed and hit by an anti-mask customer through a drive-thru window in Oakland, California, she told Business Insider. In Illinois, María Villaseñor recently filed a complaint with the Chicago Department of Public Health after seeing a McDonald’s coworker attacked by a customer she asked to wear a mask.

“Throughout the pandemic, McDonald’s has failed to protect us from COVID-19,” Villaseñor told Business Insider. “Now it’s asking us to police a culture war that’s not in our job description and that we’re not paid to do.”

McDonald’s did not feel the survey was an accurate representation of working conditions its employees face, and issued a statement dismissing the findings.

“[It is] disappointing to see the SEIU stirring up media attention yet again with these inaccurate characterizations, which do not represent what is happening in our 14,000 restaurants across the country,” the company told Business Insider. “This survey represents just 0.5% of the more than 800,000 crew and managers within our McDonald’s family working across our U.S. restaurants. While the SEIU is spending time sharing misinformation, McDonald’s and our 2,000 franchisees are focused keeping crew and managers employed in safe environments to serve healthcare workers, first responders, and communities during this pandemic.”

Many businesses, states, and localities are requiring people to wear masks in public, often putting lower-level employees in the unenviable position of having to approach customers without masks to tell them they must either put on a mask or leave.

At times, these workers have run into customers whose resistance to masks is so steadfast that they will defend it with violence. In a Louisiana Walmart, a man hit a police officer with his car and resisted arrest when the officer attempted to confront him over not having a mask on.

Viral video captures vicious mob brutally beating couple at airport while security stands by filming

A disturbing video is making the rounds on social media featuring a mob of black women pummeling a white couple in an unidentified airport.

What are the details?

Shocking video shows a young white couple in an altercation with several black women at an airport.

It is not clear at the time of this writing what initially started the argument, but the white woman can be seen backhanding a black woman after the black woman rushes her to shout at her and her boyfriend.

At that point, all hell breaks loose and a horde of black women end up piling on top of the white woman and her boyfriend, relentlessly throwing fists, elbows, and feet.

Later on, two people who appear to be airport security guards can be seen watching the incident with mild interest. One of them has their phone out and appears to be recording the melee.

The video also shows the white woman lying on the floor with her boyfriend on top of her, shielding her head from the blows raining down on the two of them.

One user who shared the footage — British political activist and author Mark Collett — wrote, “A white couple are brutally set upon in an airport & the white man desperately tries to protect his girlfriend as what appear to be airport security simply stand & watch. I doubt this will be covered by the media, but you can bet that it would have if the races were reversed!”

Graphic video captures the moment on-the-loose assault suspect plows through elderly man while stealing the victim’s car

Houston police are seeking a suspect who is accused of viciously assaulting an 83-year-old man and stealing his vehicle.

While making off with the elderly man’s car, the suspect also ran him over in his quest to flee a local gas station parking lot.

What are the details?

According to a Thursday KHOU-TV report, the incident took place on June 28.

The Houston Police Department announced that the suspect reportedly approached the elderly man, who was standing in the parking lot of a Valero gas station and smoking a cigarette.

The suspect then reportedly punched the man in the face, knocking him to the ground.

It is unknown whether the suspect exchanged words with the elderly man before striking him in the face.

While the elderly man struggled to get on his feet, the suspect then reportedly entered the man’s vehicle — a Toyota Camry — which was left running in the lot.

The elderly man was able to get up, and attempted to stop the suspect from stealing his vehicle. The suspect was able to get away, however, and struck the elderly man with his own car before fleeing the parking lot.

The elderly man — who remains unnamed at the time of this writing — said he did not know the suspect, and insisted that the attack was unprovoked.

What else?

Police said that the elderly man’s car was found abandoned on July 1.

Authorities are still seeking the suspect, who is wanted for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. He is described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, about 6 feet tall, and weighing 180 to 200 pounds.

The suspect wore a black shirt, gray pants, and had a red bandanna tied on his head during the incident.

Police announce charges against suspect who viciously beat Macy’s employee in ‘unprovoked attack’

Michigan police have finally announced criminal charges against the suspect who brutally attacked a Macy’s store manager.

On Friday afternoon, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced he has charged 18-year-old Damire Palmer with “assault to do great bodily harm less than murder,” WJRT-TV reported.

The crime is a felony and carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

In a viral video, Palmer is allegedly seen brutally beating a Macy’s store manager in Flint. Palmer’s brother, who filmed the attack, later claimed the victim called his brother the N-word, which provoked the attack. However, Macy’s debunked the claim after investigating the June 15 incident, explaining the attack was completely “unprovoked.”

Police have been searching for the brothers for more than a week, but they have yet to locate them.

At a press conference, Leyton confirmed the attack was unprovoked.

“This was an unprovoked attack,” Leyton said. “The internal video for Macy’s shows the suspect approaching from behind the victim. The store manager appears unaware that he’s even there.”

In fact, the district attorney explained that Palmer and the victim called prior to the attack, when Palmer asked if a jacket fit him.

Regarding the accusation that the store manager used a racial epithet, Leyton said there was no evidence proving that happened — and even if it had occurred, the use of racial slurs do not legally permit assault.

“Even if there were verbal provocation, which we have no evidence of, violent retaliation is not permitted by the law,” Leyton explained, WJRT reported.

KTRK-TV reported.

“I looked over and said, ‘There’s a line for a reason,'” the shopper told the station.

Words were exchanged, and he added to KTRK that the group mocked his hair and clothes.

Then comes the beatdown

After he paid and left, the group met him in the parking lot and took turns kicking and punching him, the station said.

The victim told KTRK he just took the beating. Video of the attack shows he didn’t fight back or protect himself.

“I don’t know what else I could do,” he added to the station. “The fifth one at the end came out of the store after purchasing goods and came up to me and kicked me in the face and said, ‘Black lives matter, [expletive].'”

Here’s the clip:

The victim suffered a swollen lip, bruising, and a cut near his eye, KTRK reported, adding that Harris County Sheriff’s deputies said he refused to seek treatment.

The victim and his girlfriend asked not to be identified out of fear for their safety, the station said, adding that she said she’s received death threats.

“I really hope they’re caught before someone else gets hurt,” his girlfriend added to KTRK. “I hope that the people take this and don’t say, ‘It’s white against black.’ I don’t want this to be the statement. I want it to be, ‘Here’s a man who was checking out and stood up for himself, and he was targeted for that.'”

Buffalo officers who shoved elderly man criminally charged — but city’s Dem mayor blames the victim

The two Buffalo police officers seen in a viral video shoving an elderly man to the ground on Thursday have been criminally charged.

Officers Robert McCabe, 32, and Aaron Torgalski, 39, have been charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn announced on Saturday. Both officers, who were suspended without pay on Friday, pleaded not guilty and were released on bail.

The officers will return to court on July 20.

Flynn said the officers “clearly crossed the line” and that he “can’t turn a blind eye to that,” NBC News reported.

“If he was violating a curfew, if he was being disorderly, you turn him around, handcuff him, and take him away arrested. It’s as simple as that,” Flynn explained. “You don’t take a baton and shove it; along with the officer next to him using his right hand to shove him and knock him down, and crack his head, his skull on the concrete.”

A viral video showed the officers shove 75-year-old Martin Gugino to the ground during protests in Buffalo. As a result of the push, Gugino’s head violently hit the sidewalk, and seconds later, a pool of blood appeared underneath Gugino’s head. The incident occurred just after the city’s 8 p.m. curfew.

City officials originally said Gugino “tripped and fell,” but the video directly disputed those claims.

Still, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, a Democrat, seemingly excused the actions of the officers during an interview on Friday, WBEN-AM reported.

Brown described Gugino as “a key and major instigator” of the violence occurring in the city, though he did not provide evidence to back that claim.

“He was in the area after the curfew,” Brown said. “He was trying to spark up the crowd of people.”

Deadly shooting of teen was ‘retaliatory’ for savage mass stomping of girl, police say

The killing of a teenager in Brooklyn earlier this week was a “retaliatory shooting” for the savage mass stomping of a 15-year-old girl in March, police told the New York Daily News.

What are the details?

Tyquan Howard, 16, died Tuesday night, hours after he was shot in the abdomen on St. John’s Place near Utica Avenue, officials told the paper.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison told the Daily News Thursday that the shooting location was just steps away from where authorities said Howard and over a dozen other teens stomped and beat the girl March 5 before one of them pulled her Air Jordan sneakers right off her feet.

Harrison told the paper his detectives linked the two incidents: “[This was a] retaliatory shooting that stems from the young woman jumped and robbed by a group of boys over by the Albany Houses. All of it is stemming from crew-on-crew, gang-on-gang violence.”

Howard was among several teens charged after police released surveillance video of the attack on the girl, the Daily News said, adding that he was conscious after being shot and told police he didn’t know the shooter. No arrests have been made, the paper said.

What’s the background?

In the March mass assault caught on video, the girl apparently was knocked to the sidewalk by one male before others joined the attack and began stomping her:

In the aftermath, five males between the ages of 14 and 17 were arrested and charged with robbery and gang assault. A mother of one suspect told the New York Daily News she made her 14-year-old son turn himself into police.

“When I saw the video I literally wanted to kill him with my own hands. I was very, very pissed off,” Donna Howell told the paper. “He didn’t want to go at first and I said, ‘No you’re going to go, you’re going to turn yourself in.'”

Judge calls sneaker-stealing suspect ‘youthful offender’ rather than ‘defendant’

A 14-year-old accused by prosecutors of stealing the girl’s sneakers was referred to as a “youthful offender” by Judge Ruth Shillingford rather than “defendant” during his arraignment, the Daily News said in a separate story. It isn’t clear if the teen in question is the same one whose mother made him turn himself in to cops.

The Brooklyn district attorney requested $10,000 bail for all 11 suspects eventually arrested, but that was rejected — instead they were hit with after-school curfews, the Daily News said.

The Daily News also talked to the victim’s neighbors who described her as a quiet girl who lives with her mother and sister.

“She doesn’t get in trouble, she doesn’t deserve that,” 13-year-old neighbor Jacob Black told the Daily News. “She’s a basketball player, that’s all she does.”

“She goes to school and comes home. She’s quiet,” a next-door neighbor who declined to share her name added to paper. “Those were animals. I can’t see how those young boys did that to her.”

Teen accused in savage mass stomping of girl is shot dead, police sources say

A teenager accused of taking part in a savage mass stomping of 15-year-old girl in Brooklyn in March was shot dead Tuesday, the New York Post reported, citing law enforcement sources.

It’s not clear what was behind the shooting, and no arrests had been made as of early Wednesday, law enforcement officials added to the Post.

Dollar Tree clerk tells man to wear mask in store, so he wipes his nose and face on clerk’s shirt: ‘Here, I will use this as a mask’

A man was caught on surveillance video wiping his nose and face on a Dollar Tree clerk’s shirt after she told him he must wear a mask while inside the store in Holly, Michigan, on Saturday afternoon, police said.

What are the details?

The clerk also referred the man to signs posted on the store’s entry doors instructing customers to wear masks before entering, police said, which has become standard operating procedure in most stores around the United States in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

But instead police said the man walked over to the clerk and wiped his nose and face on her shirt while stating, “Here, I will use this as a mask.”

Police said the man continued to be loud and disruptive inside the store before leaving in a white van.

Assault breast implants Crime guns Intelwars

A woman is shot in the chest. Her breast implants likely save her life.

A Toronto woman’s breast implants likely saved her life after she was randomly shot in the chest, Agence France-Presse reported Wednesday.

What are the details?

The unnamed woman, a 30-year-old with silicone breast implants, was walking down the street during a 2018 incident that took place in Toronto.

An unidentified assailant then approached her and shot her in the chest at close orange.

The outlet reported that the woman’s left breast implant was able to deflect the shot “away from her vital organs into the other breast.”

The woman visited the hospital, where surgeons discovered a single entry wound. They retrieved a bullet from below her right breast. Forensics revealed that the bullet was of a copper jacketed .40 caliber variety.

Medical officials say that the bullet passed through the woman’s left implant and struck her right implant.

“Based on trajectory of bullet entry clinically and evaluation radiologically, the only source of bullet deflection of the bullet is the left breast implant,” researchers determined. “This implant overlies the heart and intrathoracic cavity and therefore likely saved the woman’s life.”

What else?

Surgeon Giancarlo McEvenue, author of the study as well a surgeon who treated the woman, told CNN that the implant “caused the change in trajectory of the bullet.”

“She was talking — the trauma team was in disbelief at how well she was,” McEvenue said.

“On the left-hand side is the heart and lungs,” McEvenue added. “If the bullet would have gone into the chest, she would have had a much more serious, possible life-threatening injury.”

Doctors treated the woman’s gunshot wound by removing her implants, “irrigating the wound and prescribing a short course of antibiotics,” CNN reported. She also suffered a rib fracture on her right side.

The case was reported last week in the SAGE medical journal.

“The incident … is one of only a handful of cases where a woman was saved by her breast implants and is believed to be the first involving silicone ones,” the outlet reported.

Officials say that the weapon was never recovered, and the suspect remains unidentified.

‘Now you’re going to get the corona’: Bus passenger allegedly spits on, punches driver — due to cellphone that cracked after he dropped it

A 27-year-old man punched and spit on a Portland bus driver over the weekend and capped off the deed by declaring, “Now you’re going to get the corona,” the Oregonian reported, citing a probable cause affidavit filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

What are the details?

JJ Lee Purcell was the only passenger on a TriMet bus driven by Don Tacha when Purcell allegedly started screaming at the driver after Purcell dropped his cellphone and it cracked, the paper said, citing court documents.

Purcell reportedly tried to punch Tacha around a plastic protective barrier that was installed on some buses last year due to increased assaults against drivers, the Oregonian added.

He “made contact” with his punch, spit on Tacha, and yelled that he had infected the operator with the coronavirus, the paper said, citing court documents.

Purcell — who stands 5-feet 6-inches tall and weighs 140 pounds — was booked into Multnomah County Jail just after 2 a.m. Saturday. Jail records indicated he remained an inmate as of Wednesday morning. No bail amount was listed.

He was charged with attempted assault, interfering with pubic transportation, and harassment — all misdemeanors.

TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt told the Oregonian that the transit agency appreciated the “quick work” of the district attorney’s office in the case.

“The safety and security of our operators and passengers who must ride right now is of the utmost importance, especially during this time of so much uncertainty,” Altstadt added to the paper.

Anything else?

The Oregonian also said TriMet rides were down 60% last week compared to February’s ridership, and the agency said service cuts will begin Sunday.

Drivers have contacted TriMet’s Operations Command Center a dozen times between March 24 and March 31 over concerns about possible coronavirus exposure, the paper said, citing public records. In those incidents, buses are returned to the garage and cleaned, the Oregonian said.

The paper added that it isn’t clear if the spitting case was one of those 12 possible exposure instances. TriMet said Monday it had its first known case of an employee testing positive for COVID-19.

VIDEO: Woman sneaks into towing yard, allegedly takes her truck, rams through fence, smashes company vehicle — and sends employee flying

Surveillance video shows the shocking moment when a woman — who sneaked into a Portland, Oregon, towing yard early Wednesday morning — allegedly rammed through the lot’s gate and fence with her truck, smashed a company vehicle, and sent an employee flying through the air.

“They tried to kill him,” Jack Durrett told KOIN-TV, whose son Joshua was the victim. “I mean, she knew he was there, she saw him and still ran him down and kept trying to continue to do so.”

What are the details?

Video shows a woman and a man arriving at the gate of 21st Century Towing; the timer on the video indicates it’s just after 5:35 a.m. The woman hands the man a pair of lock cutters.

After he appears to cut through the gate’s padlock, she decides to crawl underneath the fence instead.

Apparently unable to open the gate, the woman walks back and allegedly gets in her truck.

At that point, employee Joshua Durrett pulled up in a company vehicle and spotted activity inside the towing yard, reportedly believing it to be a co-worker, KOIN said.

Then the clip shows the driver of the truck ramming through the gate and fence, sending Durrett flying.

Durrett quickly gets up as the driver goes into reverse and then rams into the company vehicle again. Durrett is then seen pounding on the truck’s driver-side window.

But there was no stopping the driver, who hit the gas again, caromed off the company vehicle and sped away through the opening.

Here’s the video report:

Caught!

Another towing company employee on Saturday spotted the truck that smashed through the fence, after which police were called to seize the truck, which was determined to have been stolen, KOIN-TV reported in a follow-up story.

And just before 9:30 p.m. that same day an anonymous caller who had seen the surveillance video on the news told police the whereabouts of one of the suspects, and police went to the address they were given to investigate, the station said.

Nicole O. Penagos-Clare, 24, was captured after a brief chase, KOIN reported, adding that she was booked into jail and faces several charges, including first-degree robbery and second-degree assault.

Police are still searching for the man who was with Penagos-Clare, the station said, as well as a van the suspects may have used.

What happened to the victim?

Jack Durrett told KOIN that his son Joshua suffered a concussion, broken collar bone, road rash, and bruises as a result of the truck-ramming incident but has since returned home from the hospital.

But for the elder Durrett, just seeing the surveillance video “is very traumatic. As a parent, you’re looking at that going, ‘Holy s**t, my son should be dead,'” he told the station.

Jack Durrett added to KOIN that the only likely reason his son survived was his quick reaction and getting out of the way so the driver couldn’t run over him.

He told the station two of his sons work for 21st Century Towing and have faced danger before.

“My other son has had guns pulled on him,” Durrett told KOIN, adding that Joshua was assaulted six months ago while trying to tow a vehicle and returned to full-time duties just three weeks ago.
